Steam for Linux

Steam won't start on Ubuntu 12.10
I installed Steam and opened it and once steam updated it goes to a black screen and then takes me back to the login screen for Ubuntu. If I login again and open Steam it does the same thing. What should I do?

What is the command in the Terminal to open Steam and get the output?
Just type 'steam' in the terminal and hit enter, it should give you an output from that.
I typed in steam in the terminal then in the terminal it looked like it was giving an output but then it went black screen then back to the login page
it gave me this
#!/usr/bin/env xdg-open

Pretty sure that's a segmentation fault, which leads me to believe that you don't have the proprietary drivers installed. Open up Software Sources and click on the tab 'Additional Drivers', see if you can install the proprietary drivers for your graphics card from there. Good luck.
I installed a propriertary driver for my 660 ti and I still get the same problem
I installed another driver and steam opened! Thank you!
Yeah some of the drivers won't work for certain cards, sometimes you just have to experiment unless you already know. :P

No problem, glad you got it working.
Thanks again! Downloading TF2 right now!
I'm having the same problem. I've two proprietary drivers installed. I believe my graphics are up to date. I updated them through steps I followed on a wiki page on ATI's drivers site. Any other advice?
