Assertion Failed: X context is not using direct rendering (vis 0xxxx). Unfasten your seatbelt...
We have a few problems in the Steam Linux client that we're trying to pin down but we need more specific configuration information than we're getting in order to diagnose them. We're looking for a handful of volunteers hitting these problems that are willing to send us detailed configuration information. If you're hitting one of these issues reproducibly, you are familiar with the Linux shell and GitHub and you can upload configuration information please reply to this.

Issues that you might have seen in shell output from the client:

1. Assert( Assertion Failed: !"Fatal Error: VGUI_Setup failed" ):Main.cpp:1939

2. Assert( Assertion Failed: X context is not using direct rendering (vis 0xxxx). Unfasten your seatbelt... ):surface_linux.cpp:1667

3. Assert( Assertion Failed: Could not open connection to X ):updateui_xwin.cpp:482

Thank you.

I think you should sticky this otherwise it will look like a thread from just a regular user and not gain much attention.

I wish I had these problems (lol), because I'd love to give any information possible.

your system info. ( help system information. )

And a copy of your command line ( start steam from the command line, with the command steam )

I'm getting a console response very similar to this. I've re-installed Ubuntu several times (12.04 , 12.10, 13.04, always x64 bit) Basically all I've done is install the OS, update the system, install catalyst drivers (13.1 stable and 13.2 beta 7, same result) install gnome-shell, and install steam-latest.deb

My "Main.ccp:" section is a different number, however everything else looks to be the same.

Terminal output:
System info:
List of all packages installed on the system according to dpkg:

Every game fails to launch, as noted in the terminal output.

I can boot off the same system on a different drive (hhd instead of ssd, ubuntu x64 12.04, same drivers) and everything works perfectly.

I'm fairly competent with Ubuntu, as this has been my sole OS for around 5 years. Let me know if there's any more info I can collect.

I'm not sure if this will be of any help or not, but everything in this post is the same hardware as above, however it is booted from a different partition into an old install of ubuntu 12.04 x64, and steam functions perfectly.
Terminal output:
System info:
dpkg --get-selections:

ok, I did a lot more testing, and this is how I fixed the problem:
sudo sh /users/share/ati/ --force
sudo reboot
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic
sudo apt-get update (there was a new kernel update to 3.2.0-38-generic)
sudo reboot
installed the ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (**experimental**beta) from Additional Drivers Interestingly it reports that the driver is not currently in use.
system info (note the video driver version)

I am not currently receiving the Assertion Failed: X context is not using direct rendering...error, where I was previously receiving it on every launch of steam.

Good, I'm glad you were able to resolve your issue. Incorrect driver configurations are often the cause of the indirect rendering issue and we've created a support page to track diagnosis and repair of such issue.
