What driver to use for 7970 in Linux Mint 14
Been having some problems getting most of my Linux-Steam games to even launch. Am thinking first it's a video driver issue, and would love some suggestions as to what driver other people are using for the 7xxx series and Linux Mint 14. Also would love the best route of installation if you can provide.

Thanks in advance!

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/RN_LN_CAT13-2_Beta.aspx

unzip it and make the .run file executable with
chmod +x amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.2-beta3-linux-x86.x86_64.run

This will build the deb packages for the driver. We use Ubuntu/quantal since Mint 14 is based on it
sudo ./amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.2-beta3-linux-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/quantal

Then install them with
sudo dpkg -i fglrx_12.100-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb fglrx-amdcccle_12.100-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb

if necessary after run
sudo apt-get install -f

Use this link it's a good guide.
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Quantal_Installation_Guide
MAKE SURE you do the manual install, DONT use the edgers repo they offer.
Also make sure you follow the removal guide that is important, then the installation guide.
This will install the 13.1 release not the most recent beta driver, if you want the beta driver go to the amd site copy the download url for the driver, and modify the commands they give you in the tutorial to match the name of the newest beta if thats the one you prefer.

Thanks very much for the input, both of you. I've installed 13.1 already and Steam doesnt even load most times. Thanks for the suggestions I'll look into them thoroughly and give them a go.
