TF2-S3TC Texture Support
So when ever I launch TF2, I get this error, so obviously, it won't launch.
"Required OpenGL extension "GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc" is not supported. Please install S3TC texture support."
Look, I'm new to linux, so please, give me step by step instructions on how to install S3TC or what ever.
PLEASE do not link me to another discussion, they didn't help me. Seriously. I have no idea what I'm doing on here.

It's an OpenGL component so my suspicion is that it's a driver issue - what's your hardware configuration and which distro are you using?

See, that's where you lose me. What do you mean?

sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 [] && sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386

Which distribution of Linux are you using? E.g. Ubuntu 12.10. What graphics adapter do you have?

from a terminal:

lspci | grep -i vga

Should list the actual hardware whatever the distro. Also try:

glxinfo | grep -i vendor

Hopefully we can work out what driver/hardware you're using.

Copy and paste those into a terminal window, one line at a time followed by return.

Okay, it kind of worked, but there was no reaction after the second line. I tryed to run the game, and to my suprise, it worked...buuuut there were not visuals. Just a black screen. I could hear the game and the button presses though.

No reaction after the second line suggests you are already running 32 bit, so it not doing anything not unusual.

glxinfo|grep OpenGL
shows most likely mesa 8. that is not enough for TF 2. you need at least mesa 9.

if you are on Ubuntu 12.10 try following drivers updates:
http://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?50038-Updated-and-Optimized-Ubuntu-Free-Graphics-Drivers
As you can see in the page it has
"Mesa packaging improvements:
support for S3TC texture compression* (Recommends included libtxc-dxtn)"
so i guess it may help you

Any suggestions for 12.04 (LTS)?

Ugh, I'm pretty much having to learn how to use Linux just to get a freaking promo item.
