Suddenly black screen freeze at startup
Hello,

I'm using steam since 3 weeks now and after i installed the up-to-date Driver Catalyst 13.1 everything worked well (well.. excepting the long loadscreens and some lags :D).

So just today i bought CSS and downloaded it. Since then no steam-game (i only have TF2 and CSS) has been starting any longer. I just get a black screen without sound. I have to exit the application killing it with xkill. I already tried some solutions which i had found in the internet, for example starting in windowed mode, disabling joystick ("-nojoy") changing variables (I don't remember which ones.. found them on a thread with an analog problem), uninstalling and reinstalling ATI-Drivers and steam (deleted configuration files etc) but nothing seems to work. Yesterday i was able to play TF2 without any problems.

Sorry for my bad english, but it is not good at all and at the moment im a little bit angry so that i can't concentrate.

I don't know what to do. Any solutions..? Any other guys with the same problem?

My System:

Core i5 2300
8 GB RAM
HD5770 1 GB

Linux Mint KDE 14 (Nadia) -> Kubuntu 12.10 Quantal
Catalyst 13.1 Driver

After the Steam update on the 6th I believe, I started having the same problem as you, also my Steam would freeze after a few minutes no matter what I did or didn't do.

Running:
"STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam"
in the terminal fixed it for me.

I think the steam runtime downloads any dependencies missing for any new games you install. I think it is safe to run it like this, but some games may not install correctly. Use at your own risk.

`STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam` is a temporary workaround for issues with steams bundled libraries. If you have issues running steam without the flag, please report it on the github so we can fix it for more users :) https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues
