12.04 Ubuntu not booting steam

I did a clean install of steam using debian and using wine. same results. I got much better results in debian though. Im stuck in updating window then after completing, it crashes. There was this one time at i got through the extracting files window, then it crashed again. I did a fresh install of ubuntu and got the same error.

Im running on ubuntu 12.04
Lenovo g470
Core-i5 Sandy Bridge
8gb ram
Installed Ubuntu via wubi.
Intel hd 3000 and ati6370 (switchable)

i tried running steam in terminal and it says:

I hope you can help me. Im pretty much learning my way in ubuntu. Steam is the only thing im sticking to windows.

Same problem after update today. We can only wait for a fix, I think.

You don't need to keep doing fresh installs - that's a supported platform so it's probably something else. the X-window problems hint it is very likely graphics related. Check you are using the proprietary driver.

I'm getting something similar now, although mine is due to installing web drivers as opposed to 'Additional Drivers' in Ubuntu, although I need to do web ones because I have a bug if I don't.
