Steam Linux to Launch Open Beta Next Week
Steam for Linux will be available for everyone to try from next week, after spending just over a month as a limited beta.

Valve cite the ‘stability of the client’ as allowing for the beta to be opened up to more users.

“The Open Beta will be available to the public and will increase the current population from 80K to a higher number,” they wrote in a message to the closed Steam for Linux Mailing List.

Awesome. Thanks Valve!

nice! There still many issues open but none of them are Showstopper bugs.

I think to reduce repeated post they could just somehow hide non working linux games from Steam.
Hope they fix the list of issues before then or it will be unbearable in here.

  • F12 crash
  • Big Picture Mode - Stuttering
  • Big Picture Mode - Navigation (Keyboard or Joypad)
  • Copy & Paste
  • Steam overlay messing with focus
  • Flash doesn't work or works badly (and has security issues)
  • TF2 sometimes doesn't start
  • Steam memory leak
  • Offline mode doesn't work
  • Test microphone doesn't work
  • Games listed as available that are not available
  • TF2 very long loading times
  • No system tray (not exactly a bug but people will complain)
  • Does not reconnect to the internet if it is disconnected and reconnected

(Some of which may be fixed but definitely a fair few remain.)
Not to mention the number of Optimus questions. If anyone uses Optimus and could write a FAQ for it now might be the time.
Great News for Linux Gaming :)

A big thanks to the Dev team for all their hard work on getting to this point. I am for one, a very grateful Steam Linux user !

I think the system tray icon is working fine in Ubuntu 12.10 Cinnamon ?

We are talking about the little Steam Icon down the bottom right which you can launch all your games and menu items from yes ?
Has the TF2-induced MainThrd 100% cycle munching bug been fixed? That one kind of is a showstopper for me, as it literally renders the game unplayable. :-\
Agreed, still many bugs to be solved.

True, but in terms of stability I don't think there's any great issue with wider testing.

I suppose it depends how you define stability.
I was hoping for a new Linux Valve title to be released upon open beta.

Probably will. Maybe L4D2 or Dota 2(I want to believe).

Maybe Portal, I noticed it is in my library under the all games category despite having not purchased it. Would be sweet if that gets added to the beta. *crosses fingers*

Unfortunately I think Dota 2 is unlikely given that there's no Mac port yet. I suspect they want to wait until they calm down with updating/releasing the game before porting it.
I read this here too

Interesting that he says "(Note: For those who play Team Fortress 2, Valve recently released an update to the game that dramatically improves the performance when using AMD Radeon hardware with the Catalyst driver.) "

Has anyone here noticed this performance improvement? Is it a fix that's out or did Michael publish early and there's a fix coming soon?

afaict performance is the same, so I'm wondering now if there's something else about my linux install that's broken...
Framerate wise I can't really tell if it has improved.
There's still far too many frame hiccups that needs to be addressed.
Are all the games that are listed in the Linux Games section but don't have linux version available for steam going to be fixed before then? That will get pretty confusing
