TF2 chat font looks too thin
I don't know if this is a "bug" or not because it has been quite some time and it hasn't changed and it seems to be consistent across all linux systems, so I'm starting to think it's just the way it is and it won't be modified.

The TF2 chat font in Linux is too thin compared to windows. Here is a comparison image:

I took those screenshots with a bright background to display the need for a thicker font which has a thicker shadow so that text remains readable at all times. Even though most of the time the Linux font is very readable, it just doesn't grab my eye. Someone could be spamming my name trying to get my attention and I probably wouldn't notice.
and one of the bigger reasons why I dislike the current look is because it makes me feel like I'm still playing valve games in WINE.

Also, if you are someone who is getting text on your linux version of TF2 that looks just like the "windows" text in my image please let me know! I would be very interested, because as far as I can tell NOBODY has text that looks like that. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You're right and this bothers me too.

Yes, it's hard to read the text

Same problem here with CS:S

Same here, I also think it's a little bit too small. I remember it was discussed some time ago, one of the devs asked if they should increase the font size but I was pretty much the only one who asked to and the others said that it was fine. So itwasn't changed, may be now :) would be nice.

+1, I agree.

The problem is that TF2 uses Tahoma Bold for the chat, and that's not installed in Linux. They should either license Tahoma for use as an embedded font, or supply their own font and replace both versions with it.

+1, agreed.
Is it just me, or does the font seem too small in general also?
I find it really difficult to browse the server lists.

Yeah, that's been submitted as a bug[]; feel free to weigh in on it since it's been this way since at least December. Probably since the beginning.

That bug report is about font size though, not the ingame font in general.

Thanks for linking to the bug. I weighed in on it, as well as in-game chat legibility.

Yeah I've noticed this as well. Especially on relatively bright maps like egypt it can be really hard to read the chat unless you point your screen at a darker surface because the white chat text has almost no shadow/outline to it.

Has anyone worked out a way to change the font? Same issue in DODS.

The issue at hand is NOT about taste. I hope that's clear to everyone, we are not saying it "looks ugly", the problem is that the text is _significantly_ more difficult to read on Linux than it is on Windows.

Maybe you've forgotten how it looks on windows, or maybe you've never seen it, so here are some comparison images:
(try to actually read the text, don't just glance at it. There are some words in some of the linux screenshots that are almost entirely unreadable.) (top is linux) (top is linux) (top is linux) (bottom is linux)

Here's one more of DODS (not my screenshot) in linux
and here is one I found on google of windows:

as you can see the player names on the kill messages in the upper right corner is much clearer on windows even with the windows screenshot is at a lower resolution
