Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Stop messing with the icon, Valve
The Steam icon in the notification area can't make up its mind whether it wants to have a black or a transparent background. Please stop messing with it, pick one and leave it alone. (Preferably, go with the original one on a black background - that works for everyone regardless of what your desktop looks like, whereas a transparent background only works if you have a dark-coloured taskbar.)

What? icons that have transparency are far more flexible themeing wise. I'm not really sure what you are alluding to. Its more likely your install's tray cannot consistently display the transparency properly, and displays the alpha bits as black when it fails. The steam tray icon has always been the same...

eh I dont know then. Between 3 versions of windows, Lubuntu, kubuntu, and linux mint 14 I have the same "original" icon. both look alright i guess.
I actually agree with the OP. The new icon almost looks like as if there was no icon at all. The background blends with the taskbar (or whatever) and the Steam symbol on it is almost the same color. It's a bit ugly, though who cares as long as it works. Valve should spend more time getting games on Steam and less on icon colors.

I used it with LXDE and XFCE with default Fedora theme.

The new Steam icon lacks contrast against a light background like the default XFCE panel. http://i.imgur.com/MpP6dNZ.png

Nope, XFCE displays transparency in icons just fine. When I first installed Steam for Linux when the beta started it had a black background with rounded corners, matching its normal application icon and matching what it has always looked like on Windows. I included the virtual desktop flipper so you can see the normal Steam icon.

I like the new icon; it looks great in KDE as well. I'm sure they were trying for something that would look good under any desktop.

Something looking good on your desktop doesn't make it great. Looking good on everyone's desktop does.

Huh? In my KDE 4.8 I only get a generic document icon :(

On MATE it works fine.
The new notification icon looks amazing and I would like to personally thank whoever changed it. It's great. Well done. Excellent choice. I'm still against putting steam in the notification area though.
