Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Steam on Linux?
I have Windows 8, and I was thinking about getting Linux. I already bought a few games on my computer. Would I be able to download them again if I got Linux, or would I have to buy them again?

as much as i know you will have no problem downloading and playing them while they have a Linux version
Kitai 22/mar./2014 às 18:41
there are certon(how ever you spell it) games you can install as the others will only be windows only

The games you buy are redownloadable on any platform the game supports. You can't download Skyrim on Linux for example coz it doesn't have a Linux port; but games like Trine 2 and (soon) The Witcher 2 have a Linux port.
Seeing your intelligence about computers, don't try linux. Unless you wanna learn how computers OS works.

And to answer your question, nor skyrim, nor payday 2 will ever work on linux. That is why there is symbols in the corner of every game on steam store. If it has penguin logo then it will work on linux, if not, then it won't.

And just you know, you can use your steam library on as many computers as you want, doesn't matter if its windows, mac or linux. Just it can't be used on two separete computers at the same time.

Who are you to forejudge the OP under those grounds? How dare you come into this thread and end up discouraging the use of Linux and the commitment thereof? If you had better intelligence you'd be willing to help this guy out.

I *highly* recommend you dual boot (meaning you have both Windows AND Linux on your computer). Learn to use Linux for a few weeks, but anything you're not comfortable with, use Windows for. Linux is the kind of thing that a new user has to ease him/herself into, rather than just jumping in the deep end. Usually people who jump in like that end up hating Linux.

I recommend Ubuntu or Linux Mint for starting on Linux. Linux is just the kernel, but what's on top of it is the OS. If you want to try out various operating systems, you could dual boot as advised above; or you could install the OS on a virtual machine and see which one you like. With the latter, you don't have to remove Windows 8. You can finally join Linux when you're ready to take the big jump.

+1
I reread the question and everything in it looks perfectly reasonable to me.

You do not have to buy them again. But just in case you're not aware: Most Steam games are not available for Linux. You cann tell which are by the Tux penguin icon.

I'm just saying if he doesn't understand as simple of concept as will his games run on linux, what the hell is he going to do when he will install nvidia prop drivers ( and it is a task of its own) and it will brake his destop leaving him with command prom? Or pulseaudio will brake? If he gonna learn how to fix all this and a lot more, go for it.

And hey, I helped him out, didn't I? Look at other two paragraph of my post...

He didn't ask that. Read his whole sentence. He asked if he has to buy them twice, and many of us asked that (themselves or others) when we were new to Steam on Linux.

And if the OP does require help with installing GPU drivers or fixing other problems then we're happy to help; that's our role as a community. It's hardly helpful to reject new people, else an entire new generation of Linuxers would be lost.

If he's new he'll likely use Ubuntu or Mint where the 'difficult' task of installing Nvidia proprietary drivers involves such complicated things as ticking the box marked 'Nvidia proprietary' in the driver selection menu...

Have you even used a noob friendly Linux distro this decade? Because it sounds like you're talking out of your arse.

I did and I know it is easier to install nvidia drivers on linux than on windows. But check box install blew my system to hell so many times I can't even count. As called "ubuntu recomened drivers" just destroys systems. It happened on ubuntu 12.04 LTS!, and on 12.10 for many people, not just me. This was then I gave up on ubuntu and really doubt they fixed it, or did they? I will try 14.04 at some point and will check it.

Ok, that is it. Lets see that discussion creator have to say and enough of this pointless discussion. You all say he will be able to handle linux, I say he won't. We will see, who wins the bet ;)

Oh and BTW jonath, this is usually that happens when you try to solve problem in linux, conversation goes way of topic and usually end ups arguing which desktop enviroment is better. So get use to it if you gonna use linux. And what is desktop enviroment? Well that is topic for the future if you gonna jump on linux.
