Open gl not using direct rendering
I have ubntu14.04 on my laptop with an nvidia gt745m I was using the 331 proprietary drivers from nvidia but my system would lock up using them. So I switiched to the 3rd party driver and now everytime I try to start a game it will tell me open glis not using direct rendering. Can some one tell me how to fix this?

You used a 3rd party repo for driver and mesa updates, didn't you? Purge it and the problem will be gone.

I'm only using those because the nvidia 331 proprietary drivers makes my system lock up.

Try older ones then.

I don't know gtx745 card, but I had to use proprietary driver 334 to get my new gtx750. Try to use the latest 337:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-337

P.S. My specs: Ubuntu 14.04 (Unity), GTX 750, 337 drivers

That seems to be helping. Thanks

Or not. My system has started locking up.

Broken card maybe? Did you try to install windows in a small partition to see if your card works well on another OS?
My PC used to hang up (garbage on video, no mouse or keyboard working...) both on Ubuntu and on Windows with NVidia driver, but worked very well with Nouveau drivers on Ubuntu (but i could only play 2D games, no openGL ones...). I had to replace my old GTX 460.
Try to be more specific. What do you mean by "locking up"?

The mouse doesn't move and nothing will respond. I have to do a hard restart. I can't exactly replace the card since the computer with ubuntu is my laptop. I can't exactly replace the graphics card because the system with ubuntu is a laptop.

Did you added ubuntu-x-swat repository and upgraded packages from it? I had similar OS behavior after that operation (I'm using Elementary OS which based on Ubuntu 12.04): system had hangs up at boot (mouse pointer didn't moved and nothing was happening. My laptop did not responding on any actions except hard reset). If you did so I think you should to revert packages and remove ubuntu-x-swat repo from APT sources list (for example, using ppa-purge application)
