Valkyria Chronicles: Update Cancelled when download reaches 100%
(I'm using Wine so I don't know how helpful the fix is.)

Every time my download reaches 100% the update is cancelled and I have to restart everything again. And its Valkyria Chronicles too! 20gb is a lot!

Its been cancelled 3 times now. I even tried reinstalling Steam, but didn't work. On top of that, I have to redownload Knights of Honor, despite having it installed already.

I still have the files last time it reached 92%. Backed them up just in case. Anyone know how to fix this?

first of all make sure to clear steam download cache (in settings). copy your 99% of the game somewhere so you can copy it over instead of re-Dling. try to move your game library to ntfs partition or to ext4 if it's already on ntfs (steam can have an attitude towards your filesystem).
if nothing works write to game dev and ask if there's any issues on their side (when I had similar issue it happened after devs forgot to upload some files or steam were slow to serve newly updated files).
if nothing helps give it 2-3 days break and try again, by this time if it's steam issue it will be corrected by itself

watch closely for steam error report on download page, what it says when drops download?

for the backup I have mentioned - just copy game folder somewhere, then you can uninstall game, copy folder back and run install again. once it started to download something just cancel download and copy your folder over (if it trashed your flies), then run verify game files. it will say you're missing X files and will download only few files it missed.

is it always says about no internet connection as an error or also anything about corrupted files?

also I have noticed your download speed isn't great. Do you have slow internet connection in general and that's your usual full speed? or if it's not, maybe there's a reason to check download servers and switch to one closest to you (or next closest if your current home server gives such low speed), it can be the reason as well

Always internet connection error, never corrupted files.
Also, the highest my internet can go is 600kb/s. Blame the service provider. Apparently we're just a little bit too far from the fiber optic lines so we can't have that service.

good. then please proceed with switching servers, let's see if it can improve the situation

I'm not sure how did you install Steam for wi dows or what is your version of wine. Personally I have never had troubles downloading games off Steam for windows either with wine from my distro repos or PoL. Running them... that's a whole other story, but downloading, no.

Depending on your location, the easiest is to switch servers and see, also, some ISPs can be at fault, or rather their DNS. I would try as well setting a different DNS server and see if that helps (you can simply wipe the /etc reolv.conf file)

If choosing the DNS path, you can do:

sudo echo "nameserver 9.9.9.9" >> /etc/resolv.conf

Depending on your distro, you may need to issue the command as su -c `echo "nameserver 9.9.9.9" >> /etc/resolv.conf`, assuming there is an active root user.

not a great suggestion, if he's on DHCP or uses network manager app manually added DNS will be owerwritten. which DNS are for nines? I know only google DNS for 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

also I doubt it is provider isssue because steam does this thing to all users on all OSes for years. I've encountered it on Debian and on Win 7, and I have 3d DNS from google in addition to my DHCP assigned stuff.

Which is why I did not mean to change those in the main router, only to RULE OUT a potential DNS block by the ISP, in my region is quite frequent.

Those DNS are from the Quad9[www.quad9.net], supposedly better than Google's for privacy.

The more I understand this stupid issue the less it makes sense. EDIT: And it keeps saying all the files are in place when I verify it.

So what's happening in this picture is: download actually, finally finished and is ready to be installed.

Turn out what was missing were these four folders. They exist in the downloading and temp folders, but not in the VC folder itself. Whenever the download finishes and these 4 are not in the VC folder the Update is Cancelled and we go back to downloading again.

However, once it begins installing both the Temp and Downloading folders are emptied.

Then, something weird happens. As it installs the files from steamapps/common/Valkyria Chronicles it gradually deletes the data until the folder reaches almost zero.

Solved. Deleted every folder and file except movies. Then it updated and installed naturally.
How that happened I will never know.

as I told you, wait 2-3 days and it will correct by itself because it's steam issue. steam app finally figured out which files and folders it have to download to consider your installation as complete. happens from time to time
steam had a maintenance downtime yesterday night, maybe it brings an update to data as well
