Error on start, subcode=1
I can start the game and see the launcher, but as soon as I click on play, I get this error:
Unable to initialize graphics system. Device may not meet minimum specs. Subcode=1

I'm running on Windows 7 Professional - Version 6.1 (Build 7601: Service Pack 1), in VirtualBox on a Lenovo X1 Carbon (host OS Archlinux).

My drivers are all up to date.
I tried to deactive directdraw acceleration doing
Right click on Desktop > Screen resolution > Advanced settings > Trouble shoot > Change settings
I then tried all different value, but nothing changed, I still get the same error.

I looked for a solution but haven't found anything so far.

I was playing AOK when I was a kid and then stopped playing video games after that.
I would really love to play this new version of Age of Empires II.

Have you all tried installing Windows Updates and updating video/graphics drivers? We've found that to resolve the issue in most cases.

Yes everything is up to date (drivers and windows update).

Still the same error.

You need to update to the latest VirtualBox and install the latest Guest Additions, making sure to install the full 3D acceleration option.

Ah, the 3D acceleration. I didn't want to install that because you have to go into safe mode to do it!

EDIT: I did it. It fixed the error, but now I get a blue screen of death instead :(

For those too lazy to follow it, basically you need to install the 3D acceleration (it will prompt and ask if you want just basic acceleration instead after checking it--choose cancel). Then bump the video RAM to 128MB and also check "enable 3D acceleration". In the game, if you get a white screen for the map, change AoE options to "not use anti aliasing" and voila.
