Broken AI (elite petersen bug)
I just recently bought the HD edition of AoE II on steam when I realized there was a new expansion (The Forgotten) to it. I had played the original a while back, so I already knew how to play the game.

Anyways, I went and bought both the HD edition and The Forgotten (seperately, as I discovered I would save one cent that way) and went to install them. It seemed at first like steam had not registered I had bought the Forgotten, and once the game was installed, I immediately went to play one of the new scenarios. However, when I did so, I found the scenario map for the Forgotten was just a black screen, and when I tried to load the scenario (it was the Alaric one), I recieved a message that the scenario failed to load. I tried again a few times to the same result, so I moved on to Random Map games, starting with one involving all five of the new civilizations in the Forgotten. One again, I got an error message saying it failed to load.

I figured the issue was that my buying The Forgotten at the same time as the HD Edition, but in seperate purchases caused some kind of error, so I restarted Steam with the hope that it would redownload the files properly. Sure enough, I found as soon as I restarted Steam, it was downloading something to do with AoE II, and when I went back to the game, the scenarios and random map games were working.

But this is where it started getting weird. Now I was getting errors with my random map games. Whenever I tried starting one, as soon as it loaded, I'd get this message:

AI Script Error

Player [Random Integer 2-8]
File elite petersen [fishboat/warboat/warboat island].per(or .per2)
ERR5001: File open failed

In essence, the error message listed a random AI player, usually one near the bottom of the player list but not always, then told me a .per or .per2 file called "elite petersen fishboat" "elite peterson warboat" or "elite petersen warboat island" (I tried a few different times and got varying results as to the file listed)

After this error message popped up, the AI of whichever player was listed would break. I'm not sure what happened, actually, but the scout and the town center do nothing perpetually and the villagers seemed to disappear off the face of the map. Basically, this makes the AI completely broken.

I tried restarting Steam again in the hopes that the same method would solve my predicament, which it didn't, and then went to verify my cache files on Steam. According to Steam, it checked out. But nothing was fixed.

After that, I went into the game files to see if I could find any files that resembled the afore mentioned game files, but none of the keywords came up. I was able to find five .per files:

shared.per
dodging.per
personality p4 and 5.per
personality p6 and 8.per
personality p7.per

There were no .per2 files to be found, either.

I'd also looked to see if anyone else had the same issues I did, but I could find only two other forum entries resembling my problem (not simply on Steam, either), and neither had a solution under them.

So basically, I don't know what to do. Sorry about the long entry, but I want to make sure any and all information that help might need is available. I run a Windows 7 Home Premium on an HP laptop. Is there anyone who can help me?

This is... odd. Have you tried a complete re-install? By which I mean using Steam's 'delete local content' option, then manually deleting the leftover files from Steam's folders, then reinstalling from scratch.

Jasper I tried exactly this after receiving many of the same such errors.. (Don't recall what the actual names were) but all Single player AI is currently Broken. Playing a Random map in single player mode is pointless at this point.

Some AI works, but every Random map I've played, it seems that the Koreans and Italians are particularly faulty. After reaching the Feudal Age, they just sit there.

Oh, yeah, AI's very buggy at the moment. I just was surprised by the specific bugs Revonworc was seeing.

I've been recieving some comments on the matter, and this is good, but the only useful suggestion I got thus far was from Jasper, suggesting I uninstall and reinstall the game.

Well, quite honestly, I'm hesitant to do that, and would prefer to see if there are other options first (I will do it eventually if nothing else gets mentioned).

Also, I've got together a little more info on the issue. I determined that the issue is not with The Forgotten, as it still exists when just playing the base HD Edition. Also, and I can't believe I haven't mentioned this before, but I am NOT using any mods. Haven't even touched the workshop for this game, yet. Just Vanilla Forgotten. I also went and tried another random map game and this time I used the "marco" and "polo" cheats to get a view of the affected civilization. I didn't play long enough to see why the settlers disappeared. But they were actually gathering resources.

Now, I know what you're thinking: that the settler in my other games were killed. Well, while that would make sense, I don't think it's true, and the reason is because the first game I played, I had accidentally set all five of the other players in a team against me.

This, I think, is also a glitch, because I had set all players, including myself, to the "-" hyphen team, which I'm fairly certain is supposed to put none on teams, but instead caused all AI players with the hyphen to join team 1 while I remained on my own (still managed to beat them, though). This, however, is a glitch I can tolerate because it can easily be worked around.

Anyways, despite the fact that no AI's were attacking that player, the settlers were still gone when I found the base late in the game. The only other logical explanation I can think of is that they were eaten by Jaguars. Also, about the scout of the civilization with the broken AI, while he doesn't seem to scout, he will attack enemies on sight.

One more thing to note, I found out that I had recorded my first random map game. It was a very long (several hours) brawl, so I won't comb through it today, but I'll do that later and get the exact answers to the specific actions of the Broken AI.

Some people have been mentioning similar issues, such as for certain civilizations, or all AI's, to stop working only part-way through the game. This is not my issue, though. The error occurs instantly, making it impossible for the AI's to advance out of the Dark Age, to to build any buildings or units.

Also, a thought had crossed my mind. When I bought Spore off of Steam, it had a MAJOR, MAJOR gamebreaking error in that when I tried to start the game, it would fail to load and close. I managed to find a fix on Steam. Basically, as it turned out, the issue was an error with the installation causing the computer's registry to not update properly, and could by fixed by simply manually updating the registry. I'm just wondering if maybe this could have a similar solution as with Spore.

Finally, I've noted a lot of people mentioning broken AI's in all sorts of different ways, and I was wondering if maybe, were I to wait a little while, that a patch might come out that might possibly fix the issues I'm having? I mean, The Forgotten only came out 13 days ago, so it can't be too usreasonable that a patch might come out addressing major bugs people were finding in an otherwise great game, right?

Except other than the Devs apparently telling us the Advanced AI's promised in the Forgotten Expansion aren't "ready" yet they have taken no offical notice of the fact that the single player AI is currently broken beyond playability. It would be nice if Ryz0n or someone would at least make an announcment telling us they aren't ignoring everyone and that they are aware of the issue and are trying to fix it.

This has been my experience with the AI after The Forgotten expansion was installed.

I like to play single-player games against tough AIs, specifically Barbarian and The Horde. After the expansion was installed, both AIs were broken.

I was getting the "file open failed" error also. I tracked the problem down to the load-random command, as in ...

(defrule
(true)
=>
(load-random
20 "filename1"
10 "filename2"
40 "filename3"
"filename4"
)
)

AIs without this command seemed to load correctly. But here's where it gets weird ...

Now I cannot use any AIs in a single-player game. Somehow I lost the ability to select
my own AI players. The drop-downs are no longer there. I did a ground-up re-install of
AoE II HD and The Forgotten DLC and sure enough, the AI drop-downs are nowhere to be found. Nothing but blank space to the left of the player names (Computer).

I searched for others that had this same problem but came up empty. Surely I can't be
the only one who can no longer select AIs. But there you have it. I hope this helps.

If you know of a more appropriate place to report this bug, please let me know.

I will confirm that I *randomly* get this error, too (about 1 in every 5 maps); however I would like to CONFIRM your Jaguar theory. I just watched a civilization exterminate itself within the first 30 minutes of a map by "wandering & seeking out wolves". The wolves killed all the villagers, and then the Scout Cavalry went to a random ally's town center and stayed there. I do not know if this is the behavior you noticed, but I wanted to add my 2¢.
