Got it working on wine :)

1. Steam Client > Select Age of Empires > Properties > Local Files > Browse Local Files
2. Rename launcher.exe to launcher2.exe
3. Rename Age HD.exe to launcher.exe
4. Double click launcher.exe (or just start the game from steam)
5. Enjoy ....

Back to the gaming :)

Important for Mac users using PlayonMac: Need to first launch Steam, then right click Age of Empires within Steam application. (Not the file in Mac finder)

I did this last update when my game stopped working and it helped but with this patch, yet again can not launch and those files have been named to the above. So still broken
1. Write complaint to steam staff
2. Answer given doesnt work
3. Ask for money back
4. Form letter recieved
5. Write suicide note blaming gabe newell and skybox labs (be sure to mention HL3 and the 2nd AoM-xpack)
Your sacrifice will not be forgotten

Don't mean to be rude or anything but honestly yr free to get bent over and f'ed by M$ as often&harsh as u like it... just don't be expecting others to join the party, afterall some of use have better things to do then lose time&sanity dealing with crudware...
PS: before making smart remarks about use being the ones having the crudware preatty please point me to any piece of linux only software actually working on widows... at least our camp' makes an efort to maximize compatibility with any&all hardware&software while M$ can't even be arsed to ensure compatibility between its own operating sistems (case and point XP users are free to go f' themselves as age HD isn't on the menu for them)

Here is how i fixed aoe2hd after the last updates : https://anonmgur.com/?24cb57845f19c62896b76753d144e946.png

You have to add library library overrides for 3 libs. However, after closing the game, i have to use wine's task manager and kill rpcss.exe so that Steam doesn't keep thinking the game is running.

I have played a few single player games but have not tested anything else. I used the playonlinux debug window (which is really a wine logfile) to find which libraries were missing.
