Towns
Yay, now we can block off water..
Now if only my townies wouldn't seal themselves in a flooding tomb while doing it... orz

only one problem with water now ... it evaporates, i had a lake around my city prepatch. When the water started to dissappear and only went a small bit away from the river, i got quite sad, it makes the new canal system meaningless :P
I was having trouble keeping pressure in my water pipes when they are any distance from the river...but after some playing I discovered a trick. I will post a screen shot later to elaborate but essentially segmenting the pipes with flood gates and allowing them to fill one at a time helps the water travel further. Maybe evaporation happens more slowly when there is just a lot of water? Maybe it doesn't happen in a contained space like underground? Either way, I have huge pipe systems that are 3 wide and 5 wide and streatch 3/4 the way across the map. I put flood gates every 10-15. I let the water reach "whitecap" level before opening the next set. Instead of just petering out it will reach the next flood gates and eventually reach whitecap there too. My plan is the use them to fill a big ass fountain... still meguivering the waterfall :D Hopes this helps salvage the canals... though I would point out lava doesn't evaporate ^_^
I am pretty sure that ther is no evaporation if the water is compleatly full, otherwise the lake would evaporate.

I created flood gates to hold back the lake water, I can't remember why, but after that I started messing with building things in the lake. I built a tunel that runs across the lake, you know because I could. It is three levels high seperating half of the lake from the canal I built to refill the lake. I have had many setbacks in my quest to refill it. The main problems my designes have encountered is the fact that the water whell does not creat water preassure which is only worsened by the torturously slow pace that the water moves at making it hard to keep the waterweels busy.

Anyways I have scince found out that you can make a traversable tunnel with nothing but flood gates. Would have been a lot less work...
Whaling? Sereously? That doesn't seem like a feature that would feel right in towns, and besides they would have to implament some sort of boat system and that might be alot of work.

It wouldn't be that hard to make a city in the middle of the lake, blocks dont fall as long as they have another block to hold onto. Just drain a level of the lake. Use scaffolding to connect the first block to the wall. Once you are done remove the scafolding and fill the lake.
Yeah, evaporation. I thought it was cool that water manipulation was improved.

But, I made a pipeline up to the top levels and it was suppose to be a huge waterfall cascading down the hill, but, the water evaporates before it gets to the edge!

I thought I could now flood out the monsters and set it up to drain down several levels... the water evaporates before it gets to the drain on level -2!!

Oh, well.
I havn't actually tried it out, but it should be posible to make a path of floogates that lead into your town through a water filled room (I have made such a path in a room that was going to flood due to mining into the lake so I know that part at least should work). When the monsters enter the room open the flood gates and they should drown. I guess just place a locked doror at the end so they bunch up in the room. Actually maybe just lock the last one or two flood gates. If they somehow manage to break through it should just flood and block their path, open the first and they don't have anywhere to go so just open the rest.
