Few questions.
Hey all -

Perused the threads and didn't see one that answered my questions. Also did the few in game tutorials and that didn't clear it up either.

-How do I gain more townies?
-What does the 'Boss near' option mean for my soldiers?
-Resources (such as wood and stone) are finite, correct?
-How do I have my townies pick up random things? i.e. Spiderite

Hopefully I don't get the flaming wtfnoobgoreadyouaresodumb responses, but nothing ventured nothing gained, right?

1- you get more townies with increasing their happiness and building sleaping zones (put decoration, don't over work them, make them idle little)
2-it means they will push townies to work faster, but they will loose I think happiness even faster (maybe even health not sure, never tested it)
3-wood you can plant (till ground and plan trees), rock you can put mineshaft on special rocks that you can find in underground
4-put stockpile for it, or create items (weapons and armors that need ite items)

Hey all -
-How do I gain more townies?

I'm a noob myself but maybe I can help you a little.

You get more people by having more personal zones than your current townies can live in. And your people have have some degree of happiness.

I can't say what all creates happiness. Decorations cause happiness, a townie having his own room makes him happier, his room being on the surface makes him happier, his room having a window, walls, and roof make him happier. I read some foods make townies happier, such as cake. And having some time to rest makes townies happier.

-What does the 'Boss near' option mean for my soldiers?

Not sure about that one. Maybe that is related to assigning a soldier to being a supervisor, and that refers to him supervising the closest townie to him?

-Resources (such as wood and stone) are finite, correct?

Stone seems to be finite (but can be purchased from caravans sometimes) but you can till the ground and gather seedlings to be planted and the farms you make that way are a renewable resource. When you cut down a tree you planted it will grow back. You can also use fruit for planting to get an apple tree or pear tree for example. I'm pretty sure that works for every plant in the game. But some will have to be planted on different types of terrain or near water. Sugarcane for instance has to be very close to the water (like within a couple of grids of water) and has to be planted on grass. Bannanna trees have to be planted in jungles. Ect. If you go to the "plant" option that wil be in the menue on the right hand side of your screen it will give you the conditions for plantinnng the different things.

-How do I have my townies pick up random things? i.e. Spiderite

Have storage space (stockpile) for it, such as raw material storage, raw food storage, or processed food storage and have "haul" set to a high priority in the job priority list. That menue will be in the center top part of your screen.

Hopefully I don't get the flaming wtfnoobgoreadyouaresodumb responses, but nothing ventured nothing gained, right?

I'm new at the game too. Hopefully you'll post tips that help me as I have tons to learn still. I've always found it best to just ignore any trolling posts.

The boss around task makes that soldier a supervisor. he rotate around townies and make them work faster and move faster at the cost of a higher happiness loss. if you have a good happiness gain rate (decorations, food variety, fishing, cakes, from v12 onwards - vechs bat circling around town, then you can afford to have a few supervisors to ramp up productivity.

My favorite tactics for generating happiness is to make 3 by 3 personal rooms and put a bed, candle, and harp in them. That way they are getting a happiness boost as they sleep. I also toss in plenty of chairs and tables in the dining area and maket, along with a bird in a cage which seems to give an extra boost in two areas that they like to stand around idle in anyway..

You are not going to get flamed for asking questions on this Game. The Developers have done well in creating and evolving the Game, but, it is highly undocumented and no way as intuitive as they think. We have all been through the effort of discovering what it is we are playing. Ragnar in particular is helpful. And, there are some fan sites that offer ad hoc documentation. TheBurningPet seems to actually BE one (the only one?) of the Developers.

Good Luck and Have Fun! And DO NOT BE AFRAID TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS FORUM. I for one appreciate it. And, we have all been through it before you.

I agree with what you say astyanyx. One of the early mistakes I made was to zone out a personal room like a dorm. Until I realized that despite the dozens of beds and decor, only one Townie was getting it!!

I always try to buy the gold stuff merchants sell. The bird cages and statues, they are made of hard to aquire gold and, yes, unofficial documentation states that they get maximum happiness bonus. Aside from personal rooms, I try to place them in high traffic areas so the Townies will brush near them.

Thanks again, folks - much appreciated. This game is a ton of fun, so much to do. I have started over a number of times because my townies keep getting trashed by Froggy and Tree-people - blargh! - but I am enjoying figuring things out. Thanks for the help =D
