Unreal engine is free
BUT, they take a cut of revenues from a published for profit game

If I publish a game with CryEngine here, do they take a cut of revenue?

No they dont. And unreal isnt free, it costs about 19 bucks a month.
TM 28/mai/2014 às 8:41
From the FAQ:

Is it really royalty free?
Yes, the monthly subscription fee is all you have to pay, there’s no royalty share required when you commercialize your game projects.

"What is UDK?

The Unreal Development Kit is the free edition of Unreal Engine 3 that provides access to the award-winning 3D game engine and professional toolset used in blockbuster video game development, architectural visualization, mobile game development, 3D rendering, digital films and more."

Also..

"If you create a games or commercial applications using UDK for sale or distribution to an end-user or client, or if you are providing services in connection with a UDK based game or application, the per-seat option does not apply. Instead the license terms for this arrangement are US$99 up-front, and a 0% royalty on you or your company’s first US$50,000 in UDK related revenue from all your UDK based games or commercial applications, and a 25% royalty on UDK related revenue from all your UDK based games or commercial applications above US$50,000. UDK related revenue includes, but is not limited to, monies earned from: sales, services, training, advertisements, sponsorships, endorsements, memberships, subscription fees, in-game transactions, rentals and pay-to-play. UDK is UE3 based, he assumed you meant UE4.
Matt 28/mai/2014 às 9:03
UE4 will remain paid subscription, but lend me your attention here. Epic only asks for you to pay the subscription to "Recieve Updates". Not to "Use" their engine.

Crytek just shorted everyone out with a rubber fist up their own butts. Because not only do you pay Crytek a subscription fee. But if you CANCEL that subscription. You NO longer can use the Cryengine at your disposal.
MarcelH 28/mai/2014 às 9:05
No, if you create a PC game with the CRYENGINE subscription, you do not have to pay any further royalties or fees to us.

You are comparing a non-commercial license with a commercial license...
Unreal commercial license is deffinately not free as wel.
Also the non-commercial version of CryEngine is free as well http://www.crydev.net/dm_eds/download_detail.php?id=4

MarcelH, how can one simply not make a game using your engine. Also, how are you able to monitor the knowledge of that persons use. I've read the FAQ on CryDev website already. Where your company boldly stated. Here...

"What will happen to my project if I cancel my subscription?
- Stopping the subscription means that CRYENGINE and its Tools are no longer available in your account."

Thats very messed up. Because I don't know who's decision this was. But it's completely assinine. How much do you think "to-be" and "already" developers going to fork over monthly payments to an engine that offers NO source code, legit full working documentation, and flexiblity as Unreal 4. With the competing model Epic has already provided. Plus more?

It's not free.

UE4 subscription costs 20$/month + 5% share of net profits.

A very similar deal overall. Quite generous, to say the least, compared to your usual 500,000$+ license. The biggest surprise is that Crytek aren't demanding any royalties, which is HUGE.

Let's make something clear for you.

you pay $20.00 to Epic 1 time for unreal 4. You get unreal 4. You cancel your subscription right after paying that $20.00 and having downloaded unreal 4. You CAN STILL USE unreal 4.

With Crytek. You pay $9.00 MONTHLY fee. You get Cryengine. Cancel your subscription after having downloaded Cryengine. You CANNOT USE Cryengine any longer.

Literally, you are paying your royalties up front right now with cryengine. Which is why they are not asking for them after you publish. Whereas with epic, you can keep a larger sum of your money while working with their tech. While only giving them a small 5% cut of your profit. Epic wins, Crytek loses.

You have made your point and preference quite clear Matt, and repeatedly so. There is no need to personally attack or insult other users!
DesktopMan 28/mai/2014 às 9:33
If 5% of your revenues is less than $9 a month over the entire dev time you aren't really selling anything. So unless that's the plan, $9 a month is much cheaper.

You also get the added benefit of constant updates.

18 copies at $10 a pop a month on average = $9 per month in UE4 revenue sharing.
