Granny's Lists - Resource Directories
These are lists of resources compiled by our resident resource hound, Grandma Deb. She has compiled these lists of resources to make it easier for people to find the appropriate graphics for whatever project they're working on. I have permission to post these here however there are three conditions that that you must follower concerning these resources:

1. Please respect the terms of the artists listed.
2. Do not reproduce or post the images or lists elsewhere.
3. Always credit the artist who created the original resource.

Note that many of these resources say they are for VX and not for VX Ace. Remember that VX and Ace use the same resource specifications so the resources will work with both makers. And without further ado, the lists.

This thread needs to be stickied!

Anyway, I somewhat found a solution to my tileset problem (not finding ones with the right tone for my game), and it was found in this thread
http://www.rpgmakervxace.net/topic/5613-guide-to-simple-tileset-edits-rearranging-clumping-and-recoloring/

Especially the recoloring part. It may sound stupid on paper, but it really goes a long way in setting a unique mood or atmosphere in your game. You can do stuff like color leaves in a forest tileset differently to make stuff like different seasons, or make a dungeon set really dark, make different colored houses, etc etc.
GIMP is free and does the job fine, as the tutorial states. Go check it out, proved very useful to me.

I'm curious about something. What is the standard form of "crediting" someone for their work? List them in a credits screen after the game? Before the game? Give them credit in the description of the game? Do I just list their name/screen name, or am I supposed to provide a link of where I got the resources from?

Another question, some people in those links will say something like "feel free to use whatever you want" but how am I suppose to treat something where it isn't made clear how to use the material? Can I use it in any fashion? Is it only supposed to be used in free games? If it's not made clear do I assume I can use it in any way I want?

Usually, you go by the resource provider's terms. If there is no special mention, credits in the end of game or before the game or text file included in the game folder are good choices. If the terms ask linking back, then it is necessary.

Same goes about free/commercial permission. If there is no clear statement about it in terms, better always ask from the author of the resources.

TL;DR Read the terms of the resource author!

So I downloaded some sprites that have green backgrounds instead of white backgrounds like all the other sprites do (I think they were designed for an earlier version of RPG Maker) and the green background shows up in the game as well. I tried editing them and making the backgrounds white to match what the others look like but again the white background shows up in the game.

Is there a way to use these sprites or can I only use sprites that people have designed for this version of RPG Maker?

If you import them with the resource manager it will show you the image and allow you to select the transparent colour. You can then just click on the green background and then it will be transparent in the editor.

Thank you for this.

Ohh, that makes more sense then what I was doing of just moving the image in the folder with the other images.

I have another question, some people say to put an ! or $ (or both) in front of the image name, what exactly does this symbol denote and what is the purpose of doing so?
Hatsukuro 26 Dec, 2012 @ 11:15am
"$" denotes that the image only had one character in it rather than 8. See how most images have 8 characters in them? If you put "$" in the name, it will assume there is only 1 character in it.

"!" is used to prevent the graphic from getting shifted up. By default character sets are shifted up somewhere between 2 and 4 pixels (I forget the exact number off the top of my head). If the name contains "!" the graphic will not get shifted up and will be aligned with the bottom of the grid.

Thanks again! That explains much.

Perhaps if you or anyone else has time for one more question? How do I add more icons (for items and swords and the like) to my game? I see a lot of icons out there for download but I can't seem to incorporate them into my game.
Scinaya 26 Dec, 2012 @ 8:36pm
You have to incorporate them in the iconsheet, since only one sheet is allowed by default. You can do that even in MS Paint. Remember also the icons need to be aligned on a grid of 24x24 px. :)

A lot of these seem to be in japanese. How am I supposed to know the author's terms of usage? Or all these listed ones free to use as long as I credit them?

Heh, there are so many there I feel a little overwhelmed. :)

Like I found this in granny's lists: http://www.rpgmakervx.net/index.php?showtopic=5576

And I'd like to use a tile from that set, but I'm not sure what the terms are. I tried to google translate from japanse, but I couldn't make heads or tails of it.

For that topic, you credit Enterbrain. In some cases a quick scroll through some of the lists will sometimes tell you who to credit.
Levi 27 Dec, 2012 @ 7:54am
Hmm okay. But what about commerical terms? I doubt I'd ever put out a comercial game, but its still good to know.
Hatsukuro 27 Dec, 2012 @ 2:20pm
Commercial I'm not too sure about for that particular topic. In most commercial cases you'd probably need to contact the author so good luck with the Japanese resources in the first place. If all else fails, it doesn't hurt to ask on the main forums.
Levi 27 Dec, 2012 @ 2:40pm
Okay, thanks! I'd probably go about re-tiling everything anyway if it got to that point so I would be able to do more research then. For now I'll just write the names down as I go. :)
