Closest thing to Multiplayer I found really needs more attention!
This is not a movement script or anything fancy. But it does provide a login system and uses a SQL Database. Pretty much the limits are endless with this kind of power: http://www.rpgmakervxace.net/topic/20187-online-database-systemphp-mysql/

Now using php/mysql to move around the map might be a bit far fetched but honestly I could see someone coming up with something simple and spawn like having your world instance and saying all the cities show up online portion of it would be pretty neat just simple interaction like trading/chatting.

Not much is required a site with php/mysql these can easily be gotten for $5 or less pretty much anywhere these days :)

Ooooh that would be an opening. the only problem is that it would need a server and maintenance I guess. But it is surely very interesting!

If all you are concerned with is chatting and movement, I find it a lot more straightforward to just code your own server app in a more general purpose language. You could, of course, do socket programming in PHP, however.
In any case, here is a very basic test example I made for myself ages ago: http://i.imgur.com/zKWikbL.jpg
I'm using Java for the server and am communicating with it via Winsock in VX Ace. If anyone is interested in making a MP system and can code, just ask and I'll fill you in on the details.

There are a lot of things a programmer could do to make things significantly more straightforward/accessible for other users. That said, MP means different things to different people and to make a system that encompasses all those needs would be complicated, to say the least.

What did you have in mind?

I would love this. Sorry for the delay reply. In fact I bet you bring this to the community it would get really big really fast. From all my research the biggest things that a lot of people seem to want and would enjoy is some form of multiplayer.

The second that happens then RPG Maker just goes out of control. I myself would even love like a very basic system like ghosting of players and just communication. Clearly doing a full out MP is possible but would also take a lot of time and scripting.

I think just a nice stable MP is just the ability to ghost people around the world sort of fade their char and maybe make them glow or something with their name and other players can like talk locally or something cute haha.

PS I highly suggest you consider posting this here:
http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/forum/34-rgssx-scripts-in-development/

Pretty heavy visited site and would get people perking for interests.

Ah, the thing is, my script is very rudimentary in its current state (with only player movement tracking on the same map implemented) and I just dont see how it could be useful to anyone aside from other programmers that are interested in seeing how it's done. I wouldn't mind making a system that you've outlined (ghosting of players and chatting), as it would be fun to do, but I've got my hands full with another RM related project that I'd like to focus on right now.

If you know of a thread where someone is interested in making a multiplayer system but not sure where to get started, feel free to let me know.

Thanks, Yeah unfortunately I don't know how to do the programming myself.

I actually got really excited and posted your thing on reddit and a lot of people liked the idea of it:

I appreciate the gesture, but I honestly don't think it's as groundbreaking as you may think it is. You piqued my curiousity so I did some digging on the matter (MP with RPG Maker) and found that there already has been one made before, albeit on XP: http://forum.chaos-project.com/index.php?topic=3869.0

Not to mention, I didn't do everything from scratch either -- I used this existing script, which provides wrapper code for some Winsock functions, as a reference for the client side of things: http://eventextender.gri.im/UK.html#socket
I recall having to extend it a bit as it was missing a few vital functions but it was still a great starting point.

Anyway, as aforementioned, I appreciate it. Also, my offer still stands to anyone interested; just ask if you are interested in making one yourself.
Stone Legion 11 Jul, 2014 @ 4:38am
Yeah true. There is even one older then that but a lot more bloatish that did not work too bad. Hopefully someone considers your offer. I myself just hope whoever does do it they can at least just show the other players roaming. Not even have maps on the server or anything just pure map info / coords and you just see them in game then just the script I would try to add a transparency effect and good to go :)

I'm going to push this to the others and maybe someone will bite for this. Might be better if you post what you have if your willing on the main RPG Maker forums. http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/forum/35-rgss3-scripts-rmvx-ace/ Just say do whatever as long they keep creddit / open source and I bet it will fly.

Thanks again for replying :)

Sorry, but it goes against my policy to release something in an unfinished and half-baked state.
Plus, if you're knowledgeable enough that a working MP example is the only thing you need to get going, any of the links I posted above should be more than enough -- it was for me at least.

Hope you understand!

Necro this :)

My friend is helping out hes actually codded a server in C# and we were hoping or wondering if you had the code still so we could work with it and start getting it to work in RPG Maker.

The java side might help as well as C# and Java are so similar might be useful as an example.

By "Ghosting" do you mean like in Dark Souls, like where sometimes you can see other players but the're lie white???

No you cant kill the ghosts in darksouls, those are invaders they try to kill you and you try to kill them, also the phantoms are people who place a summon sign down and help you with certian areas

If you're seriously serious about making a 2D MMORPG, Eclipse is made specifically for that purpose and has an interface very similar to RPGMaker although, obviously it requires more work. I believe there are other similar engines but Eclipse is the premiere one and most successful from what I've seen.
Is it doable in RM? Well...sorta...in the same way that cutting down a tree with a butter knife is doable. It's not practical.
RM is great at what it does though and you can do a lot more with it if you have some decent scripting/programming knowledge.
