Why does this appeal to people?
I'm not trying to be mean. I want to understand what others find fun about it. As I expect I'm missing something from the gameplay experience.

I'm fine with the 8-bit retro style, and 2D gaming. They also did a great job on the cohesive "look & feel" of the game.

But gameplay wise, its "grab the weapon, kill the next person, repeat". I played about 6 levels or so, without it changing. Is this all the gameplay there is?

Also its very buggy. I had a hell of a time getting it to actually run, and then it always hangs on exit.

I can't remember a single game that had me doing extremely different things without repeating a certain aspect of gameplay.

Perhaps a game like Mario Party or something where you're constantly playing different mini games. Though any kind of big title game that's comes out this year has you doing the same thing over and over again in a pretty environment.

Assassins Creed has you scaling buildings and stabbing people. Call of Duty/Battlefield/Far Cry all of those fps's is : go here and use this gun to kill these people. I could go on, but this game doesn't really deserve any kind of hate for the reason you're stating.

It's a well designed game. I think that's why people like it.

I never really understand how people have problems with running games either. I've never had a problem running a single game through steam. So I can't sympathize with you really, but I'm sorry you had to experience that.

Well I can't tell you why exactly it appeals to others, but in my case I can point out some things that I've have enjoyed about HM. I like the domino effect that you cause once your exposed or just about to be exposed to the enemy. I also like how you can build up combos on the score system.

Maybe I just play it really sloppy until I find the loophole and it lets me rip through the levels in a really dynamic way. I feel that you could just pick up a gun shoot some guys, pick up another gun shoot some more, pick up a pipe hit a guy, but that can get really boring. Its really up to the player to mix it up. I dont blame you for not feeling the gameplay its pretty unforgiving aslo the boss battles can be tedious.

Most of my levels go like this: Punch a guy, shoot a guy, rip out a throat, door another guy, pickup his knife, knife a dog, throw knife at last guy and execute a guy on the ground. I dont know if this helps but in the end its just a game, dont worry, play something else you like.

I played this game for about and hour or a bit more.. And I can tell you its one of the best games there is, it really takes me to the past.. how games used to look, but in a unique badass way.

It's very challenging, it has a unique retro style, it's just fun as hell. It's definitely my favorite indie game ever.

The combat is highly lethal, and both you and your enemies are downed in one shot. You're at a severe disadvantage most of the time, so you need to be highly crafty with your approach, otherwise you'll die. The levels are short enough, and respawning is painless, so being reckless is often encouraged since you're at a disadvantage. The soundtrack is also kickass, with the dark and gritty neon vibe of the 1980s permeating the entire game. The game itself is very graphics, as blood spews everywhere and you'll be gruesomely killing many thugs. The points system and the soundtrack do tend to drown out your bloodlust though. The story has an enigmatic atmosphere to it, and solving the puzzle is interesting and compelling. I guess the greatest achievement that Hotline Miami accomplishes is being a breath of fresh air .The gameplay is fun and challenging, the setting is unique, the soundtrack is nice, the story is compelling, etc. It's a well made package, although it's not flawless by any means (I've gotten several performance dips on my 7970, and some levels are needlessly frustrating).

I can't speak for others, but for me this is the kind of games that just makes OCD -part of my brain go crazy.

Its just fun to play. To see how long of a combo you can make. Is it possible to rut through level firing you gun at everything or is it better to use melee. Plot is interesting too. Reminds me a lot of Killer7 - loved that game. Oh and kudos to you for not being an agressive jerk and just asking politely.

It's challenging, honest and presents a refreshingly original atmosphere.
It's a perfectionists dream, since it demands strong reflexes and a bizarre kind of choreography to achieve the perfect completion of a level.

Inevitably some people won't 'click' with the game, since we all have our own preferences and tastes; but I think that Hotline Miami is a real gem.

The bugs are a HUGE turnoff, especially for those who can't even get the game to work.

But it's a fun time waster to let off some steam and the music + meleeing into a room full of guns is like crack on my brain... I don't know, I just love the whole style, plot, masks, everything... except the bugs.

All of the angry people here, are angry because they can't beat a level, deep down. Try harder or go ♥♥♥♥ yourselves

Aside from my achievements not unlocking, the game is fantastic the soundtrack alone is worth a playthrough or two, not to mention the 8-Bit art style... AMAZING!
