I just bought the game yesterday and much to my dismay, It was broken right off the bat. When I try to boot it up, I immediately get a mesage that reads "Error defining an external function". When I click abort, it either goes to the desktop or actually runs the game but with no music. Oh, mother. It there something I can do to fix this? Or better yet, what exactly causes this? Thanks.

i've played this for a while now and it's only just started erroring. very odd. sometimes it'll start up past the error but without the soundtrack

Yeah it did this to me the first time I ran it, and once since. Restarting my computer has always fixed the problem, I wish I could pinpoint it though.

I'm getting this exact same problem and unfortunately restarting wont fix it. It has been working perfectly since I bought it but now.....

I've been playing the game without problems for months. Now I get this exact error. Did something change recently? I didn't update any driver or stuff.

yeah me either. maybe it's something with a recent steam update?

How often is Hotline updated? Do you know?

no clue, i just bought it recently, made it a few levels in then this happened. i think it's something with steam itself though, maybe updating something and not being fully compatiable.

This is odd, I saw that same window pop up with that error message months ago whilst on the last level. I stood right next to the final boss whilst he emptied the clips, then when he went to shoot himself he killed me as well and the error popped up. Regardless, this is pretty strange, I just started getting thi error tonight and I didn't notice HM updating recently. Any ideas anyone?

Also TuZ, nice Carmaggedon avatar. AND, if you install the package in the redist folder (vcredist) then restart das computer it should work, it did for me.

In fact I reinstalled the vcredist, rebooted, and the game worked fine. Now it's Dead Island not starting anymore, I think it might have something to do with different VCRedist versions for every different game :(

I've never played the game or got past the start up because of this error. Kinda written off the £7 as lost money now.

Wow lol, this game still has problems. I havnt played it in months, and have only ever had one session without game-breaking bugs. Came on here just to see if there was a new ultimate patch or something, however I see nothings changed....
