Compatibility Windows 8 RESOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No need to modificate the exe with compatibilities like 16bit colors, XP...

How to do that:
1) Download wined3d.exe from http://www.nongnu.org/wined3d/
2) Don't run the program! instead, extract it's contents with 7Zip or somesuch http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
3) Copy ddraw.dll, libwine.dll and wined3d.dll from extracted $SYSWIN folder into the root folder of your JA2 installation (e.g. C:\Games\Jagged Alliance 2 Gold\)
4) Run the game. It may take a bit longer to start
5) Enjoy one of the best games ever in as high FPS as your hardware can handle

(from site:http://www.bears-pit.com/board/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/topic/20560/gonew/1.html) Thanks to us!!!!!!!

Holy crap that was a fair amount of tinkering. I'll wait til something a bit simpler more in line with my limited abilities comes along. Yikes.

Hi, people. With this instruction I can start my JA2 on Windows 8, but after choosing difficulty of game, i see just a black screen and hear menu music. Please, can You help me solve this problem?

To get in run on Win 8.1, you only need to delete Intro.slf !

But, you need to do these steps with wined3d too. Because without wined3d the bullets fly very slow...

Hope this would help someone.

1. Go to http://www.nongnu.org/wined3d/

2. Look for:
Full directory (with older versions, patches...): http://download.savannah.nongnu.org/releases/wined3d

3. Than look for v1.1.38 / 24-Jun-2013 20:02
4. Download the wined3d.exe
5. Extract It with 7zip.
6. Copy ddraw.dll, libwine.dll and wined3d.dll from extracted $SYSDIR folder into the root folder of your JA2 installation

This fix worked like a charme for me yesterday. But after rebooting my PC the game won't start up again like it used to before. Even after repeating those steps multiple times it does not work anymore. Max confused and annoyed. -_-"

MAN, ty for the help! Finally i can play this wonderful nostalgic experience!
Btw: even those who got it working without the ddraw.dll I recommend downloading the version 1.1.38 of wined3d.exe, cause it improved the game's performance a lot!

Tested on Ja2: Unfinished Business from russian Gold Pack compilation under Windows 8.1 x64. Works just neat, with all intros, mouse cursor, in-game graphics and stuff. Also I got lightning-fast loading times, I can barely see loading screens now. Thanks a lot, OP, you ROCK.

Btw, Windows 7 was able to run the game out of the box yet with longer loading times.

I like how this is all hosted by the Brazilian Federal University of Paraná. Really wasn't expecting it.
