Zeno Clash 2

Zeno Clash 2

Is FPM an emerging trend?
There is a very short list of First Person Melee games. The ones I can think of before now would be that Star Wars game by Raven, The Riddick game I have only heard about (seems beloved) and ofc Zeno Clash.

I have played Chivalry recently, which has simple but usable melee combat system. A few ranged weapons have their place but the focus is on footwork and "weapon swing dynamics". Swing your weapon overhead, slashing sideways, or lunged in for a stab; each with a special animation that grants different reach and speed to the player's attack. You can even chain very crude combos depending on your class but no more than 3 hits.

The system is not as deep as ZC2's and that is taking out the SP/MP considerations that determine how the systems work.

Anyone else recently play a First Person Melee game or know of one coming up? I can name countless games which use Third Person view primarily but First Person is still rare. Also, anyone think any new or upcoming First Person Melee games will have a combat system as deep as Zeno Clash 2's?

Anyone besides me hoping 'FPM" will be a trend to beat back the torrent of "roguelikes" with pixel art and chiptunes?

From what I could tell from the reveal trailer, it looks like Mirror's Edge 2 is expanding in the direction of beat 'em up. Don't feel too good about it though... original Mirror's Edge wasn't that combat-oriented at all.
Another upcoming open-world title with FPM-system is The Forest. The approximate alpha-release date is "late 2013", which probably stands for Early Access.
:beholder: Hey, sere. How's it going?
I'd cerainly like to see more FPM games. The 1st person view feels great, imo, and I find it a shame that it's been mainly designated to shooters.
I suppose that the Elder Scrolls games could be considered FPM, though the combat is rather shallow. I've been playing the recent Shadow Warrior remake and that seems to have a strong focus on the sword. Admittedly, I'm not very far into SW, so I'm unsure if the focus moves on to guns, but currently, the katana (or Penetrator:sr4fleurdelis: in my case, lol) is the much more viable weapon.
Btw, I highly recommend the Riddick games (at least Butcher's Bay) even if you aren't an especially big fan of the movies. In fact, they made me appreciate the movies to a far greater extent. You can get both in a pack on GOG for $15 bucks, I believe.

In open fights Riddick relies heavily on counter attack followed by animation, so I wouldn't recommend it as FPM-game, however it still shines in different areas of gameplay and delivers great experience anyway.
Probably the greatest example of armed FPM combat is "Dark Messiah of Might & Magic", which gracefulness and depth combined with FBA are yet to be matched by who knows when and who knows how :)

Yeah, I agree. I didn't really think to mention specifics, but that's true. The highlights of that game, imo, are it's stealth sections and it's overall atmosphere. I did very much enjoy the prison fight club part, though, so I don't completely dismiss it as FPM, it just isn't a shining example, when compared to something like ZC.

Oh, I also wanted to mention (though only for novelty's sake), I have Dead or Alive 5 on PS Vita, and it has a 1st person touch-fight mode. You hold the Vita sideways (so the screen is tall instead of wide) and you tap and slash at your opponent. It's kinda silly, but it seems somewhat on-topic, lol.
I have been curious with both riddick and M&M (the one made by the dishonored team). I would like to try ME2 as well. At this point in time I consider ZC2 to be king, not from fanboy reasoning but because it is honestly a deep effective system.
there was an AMAZING swordfighting/magic FPM game for the Dreamcast called Maken X. Very fast but stilll skill based - boss battles were particularly tricky and injected a huge amount of personality to the combat.

Of course, finding it on youtube doesn't communicate the same feelings now, it looks like crap (came out in 1999) compared to anything released since, but i would love to see more swordfighting!

I hear Shadow Warrior has a good amount of swordplay... waiting for a good sale to get that one.
