Most of these may not be unlocked early on.
Regenerate is amazing, easily the best optional skill for boosting your survivability, if you can get out of combat for a few seconds. I'd actually say it's arguably a bit overpowered if fully upgraded.
Fully upgraded ATK Boost is the most reliable way of increasing your damage output, unless you really like magic damage, because all the others appear to be either less powerful or require a certain situation to work.
Silhouette Mirage is amazing for getting out of tricky spots. Seriously, just use it. I recommend putting it in the X slot.
Beyond that, my strategy varies somewhat from level to level anyway. If you want suggestions for special skills, though...
Peacock is good if you want to try to kill bosses without ever getting hit just by dodging around the stage and sniping, but it takes a while and sucks against ordinary blobs.
Lightning Drop is a great area attack and you can combo up+basic attack into it.
Tears of Sol is also a good area attack, can also combo into Lightning Drop.
Shrike can be used to hilarious effect if you like bouncing things off each other, and might be worth trying out.
Tetsuzankou is cool in theory, but it's not really worth it in my opinion - it requires very precise timing and will usually be interrupted if you're being attacked by multiple enemies.
Mother's Breath is ridiculously strong and hits a massive area (I ended up using it on a boss for the 'hit for loads of damage' achievement, I'm pretty sure), but the windup time is so long it will usually just get you killed. Still amazing if you can make it work.
Innocent Pendulum is funny, but not worth taking most of the time.
Two Hearts (optional skill) sounds amazing (double max hitpoints?!), but it usually doesn't help that much.
Aside from that, it's been a while, I can't remember what else is good or bad, but there's pretty much no reason not to get all of the basic skills because they don't need equipping and thus can all be used at once.
I apreciate it
Thank you I'll work around what you recomended
I apreciate it
Tetsuzanko has some pritty strict timing, like Ironclaw said, but its really rewarding if you land it
Its really useful against enemies with multi-hit attacks, as you can usually block the first hit and tetsuzanko the rest, or against crwods, you can block and tetsuzanko out of your block and it usually works
Arc slicer is really good, its an aerial skill, but if you use your diagonally up light attack, or your diagonally down light attack, you can easily land it
It has a lot of untechable time, great range and its fast, and following up is easy due to the untevhable time
Lightning drop does decent damage, gets you out of the air, has a good range, and is easily comboablo from, and into
Its another air skill, but again, you can quickly do it with your diagonal light attacks
Sonic rampage i don't use that much, but its useful when you blow an enemy away too far for a normal follow-up
And, like Ironclaw said, regeneration is amazing
A normal skill that is really good, but i don't remember the name of, is (in the air) light attack+down
if you do it next to a wall, your enemy will bounce, and you can jump and do it again, like Sol's J214k Dragon Install loops in GGXXAC+R
Awesome thank you for youre suggestions, I started working on getting those moves down, also as far as upgrading stats is their anything specific i should focus on first, or something i shouldnt upgrade?
Maybe DEF would be good on the lower difficulties (I have it maxed, but I've never actually equipped it), but I prefer to either kill things before they can hit me. If you do want to go for a defensive strategy, I would advise Turtle Guard instead, since when working as intended that makes you take no damage at all, instead of just a bit less. Or maybe Two Hearts, which is arguably a better version of HP Boost, but unlocks at a much higher level.
If you're talking about Basic Skills, there's plenty of money to grab all of them, and they're all fairly useful (Ether Wings and Blast Hammer in particular are staples for me, and the up+attack and down+attack ones are required for the diagonal attack kicks, which are some of the best combo openers available). I've never found myself using Ether Wings 2, (the input is far too long to do in the middle of a combo at my skill level, and the actual effect seems rather situational at best) but it'll get you an achievement if you chain it together enough times, and it's not like you can use it by accident.
Sorry for the slightly late reply.
P.S. Fully upgraded ATK Boost increases your ATK stat by 50%. The rest of the fully upgraded boosts are probably the same, though I seem to recall somebody saying that the last upgrade doesn't do anything.
Edit: Apparently it's called STR Boost. Well, I look pretty dumb now, don't I?
P.P.S. You might also be interested in this and this, which I forgot to mention previously - both are other threads discussing skill choices.
