A Fix if your game does not launch with Windows 10
The problem I had was solved by creating a desktop shortcut for the TurbineLauncher.exe file and adding an '-invoker' tag

I browsed to the file location of the TurbineLauncher.exe file in my Steam folder and created a shortcut on my desktop. Then edited the new shortcut adding '-invoker' at the end of the launch file forcing the game to skip using the turbine invoker app. Mine looked like this;

Target: "D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\lord of the rings online" -invoker

Hopefully the new shortcut works as well for you as it did for me.

I have a friend with an old Dell Laptop who just upgraded to Windows 10 from 7 Professional 32 bit - no problems with either the upgrade or LOTRO.

Here's what worked for me:
1. Open steam, right click Lotro (on left), select properties
2. Local Files > Browse Local Files

-- Perform the following steps on each executable file --
Executable Files: "lotroclient.exe", "turbineclientlauncher.exe", "TurbineInvoker.exe", "TurbineLauncher.exe"
For each file:
1. Right click > Properties -> Compatibility
2. Check to run as administrator
3. (Maybe optional?) Check to run in compatibility mode with Windows 7

Bernaise1 and Merlinja neither option worked for me. Got a missing .dll file that suposedly can only be fixed by reinstalling MS Visual Studio C++ 2010... I checked, I have version 2015 so I'm not even sure that will fix the problem at hand. Anybody have any idea how that will go or do I need to keep playing Alpha tester on a retail version of an OS?

That's strange, I am using Windows 10 on the latest update and LotRO launches just fine.

have you tried checking the steam files?

Don't verify the game through Steam. That will invalidate all downloaded updates, and will cause the game to have to redownload >13GB.

It doesn't matter if you have the redistributable VC++2015 package; the game needs the old package. You can download it from MS somewhere.

Got the 2010 packages installed, both 64bit and 32bit. Now the launcher will open up, spend an hour updaing, but it won't run the game. blank, nothing happens after I select a server and click play.

I'm going to uninstall LotRO and reinstall see if that's any help but wow, I haven't had such a hard time getting a game to run since the early days of Win XP.

no luck. not with the Visual Studio 2010 packages, not with compatibility mode (with and without admin) and not with -invoker tag.

THis is the only game I've consistently played through the years and I never got a chance to give my toons a proper goodbye... snif

any other advice?

You could try installing the game from the lotro site. You'll miss the Steam overlay, and the possibility to purchase things with your Steam wallet, but other than that, it's the same game.

you did check your firewall/antivirus logs to see if it was blocking lotro? other things to check here:

I'll try again this weekend, straight from the source. In fact that's how I started LotRO, before I saw it on Steam.

This is a clean install of Win 10, straight from a MS authorized refurbisher. Got the laptop, ran windows update, installed Steam and installed LotRO, as vanila as it gets (no HP bloatware) yet somehow a compatible game isn't. :steamsad:

I can get to the launcher, it connects, downloads updates if needed, then displays a list of available realms, I select one, click play... nothing happens... well not nothing I curl up in a ball and cry a little. I mean I did disable Cortana as best as possible, I don't want to cheat on my Hobbit Ministrel after all.

Good call on the official LotRO forums there cheshirm, I don't believe it to be a network, but there's a DX9 vs DX12 thread there that looks promicing... fresh Win 10 install, no DX9, "updated" Win 10 might have the older DX versions that do work.

if the game crashes then I would lean towards a dll problem. if the game just hangs, perhaps its waiting for something? still sounds like firewall or antivirus blocking the game itself (not the launcher). laptop? make SURE game is using dedicated graphics card and not the motherboard graphics. check windows event viewer or the reliability history for any game event entries.

SOLVED

DX9 is the most probable culprit amongst all my tries.

Probably a combo of resetting the .exe files to Win7 compatibility, MS Visual Studio and...
... DX9, although required by LotRO is not compabile with systems past WinXP. Luckily there is a DX version that is compatible with both, had to follow a link from an official LotRO forum

Thanks Cheshirm for leading me in the right direction.

You can get the proper DX files from MS here:

Thank you, I could kiss you! I think this was my fourth DX install attempt to fix this bloody problem. :steamhappy:
