What does Strength stat do exactly? (xpost from Desura forums)

I got this from the manual:

Strength (Str): Strength affects the damage the unit does in combat. Strength is also used to resist some special attacks and spells. The typical human has a strength of 4, a troll a strength of 8 and a giant or other large, powerful monster a strength of 10 or more.

But I didn't manage to find how exactly does it affect damage? Maybe I missed it? What other uses does it have. I've seen it's used to resist some of the spells.

Above average strength and higher gives a damage boost, while lower than the average strength gives a damage penalty, which is most notable in Goblins and Hoburgs.
