Starbound as a story and a certain progression (start with iron, end with solar or w/e highest tier is called). I think most players had similar experience - play around exploring, building, doing missions once in a while to let your creativity brain cells take a break.
Once I've completed a story (I had to cheat to beat last boss, 'cuz game kept crashing if fight took too long) I started focusing on building crop and animal farms but mostly playing with circuits (Starbound's Macrochip mod is 70% responsible for me learning how CPUs work at their lowest levels).
Usually it's a good idea to complete the story so you have all NPC services available and unless you need to create new universe save, you won't need to complete it again.
tl;dr: do story once to unlock shops and do whatever the heck you want, you can't go wrong
i'm currently working on a colony :3
And ever since then.. 650 hours of building and messing around..
You're wrong. Wrong!
well guess what. the story ended. i can do anything i want lmfao
Sadly many games throw the exploration value away with tiered resource/mob systems... or worse the other way around, scaling to your power level. It all feels extremely unnatural.
Still a decent game.
The ruin will honestly wait just for you. what a champ.
The whole point is to kinda play them how you see fit.
I didn't really know there was a way to play any kind of video game "wrong".
