ATTENTION WINDOWS 8 AND 8.1 USERS: Fixes for your GFWL issues.
First of all, credit goes to those who posted in this thread over on Reddit. http://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls/comments/1tqz1y/dark_souls_80_off_on_steam_599/ceam5fh

But I'll be copy/pasting here for the sake of ease.

P.S. Make SURE you use DSFix and turn off Anti Aliasing on Windows 8 for Dark Souls. Here's a link for DSFix in case people haven't choked you with it enough yet.

http://blog.metaclassofnil.com/?tag=dsfix

P.P.S It may also help to run a registry cleaner such as ccleaner after doing the below things to make sure there is NOTHING left of Windows 8 GFWL. And as always, run things as Admin!

Keep in mind either of these fixes could likely work on either operating system, so I suggest at least reading both, but not being a Windows 8 user myself I couldn't tell you, I'm just posting both for the sake of new players being able to actually enjoy this wonderful game.

Windows 8

"Good day everyone! If anyone with windows 8 intends to buy this fantastic game, they might incur into a problem where Games for Windows Live fails to work (says something about not being able to connect).
If this happens, you have to uninstall all Games for Windows Live programs (there should be two, one being the "marketplace") and reinstall it from here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/LIVE/PC/DownloadClient
Happy dying!"

Windows 8.1

"Step 1) Uninstall "Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace" from Programs and Features
Step 2) Uninstall "Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE Redistributable" from Programs and Features
Step 3) Reboot
Step 4) Download GFWL installer from here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/LIVE/PC/DownloadClient
Step 5) Right click the installer, compatibility tab, set to compatibility for Windows 7. Apply and OK
Step 6) Right click the installer, run as admin. Hit next until it's installed.
Step 7) GFWL should prompt you to download and install the Windows Live Sign In Assistant. It will link you to an .MSI file that did absolutely nothing on my system. Instead, download the .exe installer from here and use Windows 7 compatibility mode on it: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26686
note: At this point all the advice says the game should now be working and sign into Live. It doesn't. It's still ♥♥♥♥ed. Keep reading.
Step 8) Either uninstall/reinstall Dark Souls, or verify cache through steam. This forces the Live redist to re-run for DS which will, I'm guessing, pick up the new GFWL/sign in assistant/whatever and start working.
Step 9) Run Dark Souls. GFWL doesn't need to be running or signed in prior. Once the game loads, the windows live sign in should drop down from the top and ask you to sign in (just like a game on an xbox would)."

Sorry if any of this has been posted before, good luck!

Thank you, sir. You are a gentleman to save people the trouble of chasing down this knowledge.

Let me mention that if nothing posted here works, it does not hurt to make an account yourself on Reddit + a new topic on their Dark Souls subreddit explaining your issue and fixes you have already tried. People there could most likely help you or direct you to another already existing helpful post there.

Bump for those seeking more help! There have been a couple other great topics today about these issues.

I just wanted to thank the OP for this.

I was able to to get the game to run, but I wasn't able to save because Microsoft Games for Windows wasn't running and I couldn't seem to find any fix to the problem. But after I uninstalled Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace and Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE Redistributable and reinstalled them both, everything now runs great.

:tgrin:

Oh gosh I'm surprised someone found use in this after all / let alone found this buried amongst other topics. I'm sure there is better help out there now than this compiled post but as long as the game runs for you now, good!

Question for both OP and other people on this thread. None of this has worked for me, first, I got a different error after uninstalling GFWL completely, because I could not recover what I needed in any way. once I got to downloading GFWL Essentials, that caused the game to crash on startup. Help?

I'd like to use my Thread-Necro ability to add one thing to this list:

At one point, I managed to get everything working. Dark Souls started, GFWL started, but when I tried to download my profile, it would fail every time. Fortunately, Dark Souls tought us a thing or two about failiure and giving up...

Here's what I did to fix:
1: Download Profile, watch it fail.
2: Create an offline account (new account -> scroll down)
3: Sign out, Sign in using your online account
4: Nuke that offline account, nobody wants that ****
5: ???
6: GIANT DAD

wraith_unleashed Nov 29, 2014 @ 9:52am
it helped .. got the same info somewhere else. stil good job on this threat. next problem will probably migrating this game into steam when GFWL will be off DS
McBeard Nov 29, 2014 @ 10:39am
So far everything is working. Have a quick question: Do I use the product key steam gives me for GFWL? And if I do, will I have any issues launching the game after the migration?
