I really enjoyed Magical Diary for two of the paths specifically. Especially as one path was one I could relate to and had a character whose type would/has actually appealed to me on a real person as well. I think that some paths are more suited to the tastes of people of different ages and personalities, which works out well (for example, I didn't particularly enjoy Donald's path, but that was not an issue of writing.) The dungeons are brief but interesting.
As to drawing in, it did for me on the afforementioned 2 paths, especially my favorite one. I managed to start playing at 7pm one night and stopped at 3am... Then the following night did similar and stopped at 4am. Despite having work in the morning... <_< I do this with manga as well.
Obviously that won't be the case for everyone, I can be quite different from the majority in my experience. So don't take my opinion as definitive. ^_^
(If it helps, I normally mainly play things like JRPG's or oldschool adventure games and the Alchemist of Arland - Atelier series games, and I enjoy shoujo and josei anime and manga.)
Coming from someone who has never played this type of game before, I really enjoyed it and after finishing up the 3 endings I didn't get, I'm searching for more games.
I think the people who didn't enjoy MD didn't understand what this game is about when they bought it. This is basically a visual novel. It does, indeed, require a lot of reading and that you become invested in your own character. If you don't enjoy reading, you're not going to enjoy the game. (I LOVE reading, so this was awesome, to me.)
