From what I seen, a flamethrower is an amazingly powerful tool. Try putting a few pillboxes with flamethrower troopers in them and have them face each other, guarding the entrance to your base. If anyone tries to get in, they'll be deep fried faster than you can say McDonalds
I held bases for a fair amount of time using the chokepoint blaze tactic

okay,so [] are concrete, ... is air, /\ is a trooper with a flamer. The area beneath him is a coridor enemies can walk in. It may be kinda tricky setting up it well enough for your trooper to kill with ease and be covered well, but if you make it properly it's a very efficient and safe ambush spot!
