I am not sure which part did the trick, but after saving the game files I played around with the steam cache and preference files.
I deleted both folders "appcache" and "user data" in Library/Application Support/Steam/ and restarted the game.
Now it runs smoothly again.
Not only that the game does not crash any more, also the loading time until the main menu appears is much shorter than before.
Still the game does not store the save games in Library/Application Support/com.vpltd.TheWitcher2/... - they must be somewhere in the steam prferences folder.
I would be grateful for an information where steam puts my save games (steam cloud is still disabled btw and will be kept disabled).
As time went by, the witcher 2 started crashing more and more - eventually getting to the point of crashing everytime I would attempt to load a save.
I deleted both folders, as you outlined, and pasted the user data back in. Then I deleted all of my old saves. Now the game is snappy, loads to the main menu faster and hasn't crashed on a load.
Found the folder for the save games. Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\xxxx0137\20920
I made a 20290_bkp now I'm trying to load with fewer save files. I am certain this is causing my crashes because it only happens when I want to reload a save to try a different story arc.
im running win 8 x64 5700 gfx 1gb vram. 16gb ddr3 ram. no event log entries for these crashes.
Back the files up in another folder, and then delete the data outlined in the thread. The issue is BECAUSE you have too many saves, and the game struggles with this.
I know I already deleted my files and about 3/4 the way through the game sorry I neverr updated my post
Part of the problem is once it starts occasionally crashing you start to save more, which causes it to crash more, so you save more, until you can't play at all. Anyway didn't even think to check my saves so thank you!
