Loading causes crash, can not get into the game again
Hi there,
I have a mysterious problem running The Witcher 2 on my Mac since yesterday.
I played the game for maybe the last two weeks and in the first time it went quite smoothly.
About in the middle of chapter one it started to crash to the desktop about every half hour, mostly in auto save situations.
With the beginning of chapter two I had a strange problem when I could not load my last savegame, but got it solved by restarting the chapter.
Then I finished one longer quest and had a major crash again.

Since then I could not load any savegame again - the game just crashes to the desktop.
I could not even see the savegames - when I select load game from the main menu, the game just crashes.
When I checked the save game folder in Library/Application Support/com.vpltd.TheWitcher2 I noticed that it is empty, so I tried to start a new game, saved at the beginning, quit the game (which ended in a crash again), restart and try to load the new save game. Crashed again.
I tried to let steamcloud get my savegames back without success, so I switched steamcloud off and did not use it again.

Yesterday I even deleted the game and donloaded it again. Still keeps crashing.
I deleted the whole com.vpltd.TheWitcher2 Folder in Application Support... still crashes.

What the heck???
Does anyone have a clue, how I can get it running again?

System:
iMac late 2011
3.1GHz Core i5
OS X 10.7.5
16GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB

Thanks all and kind regards

Well, it seems that I found a solution again.
I am not sure which part did the trick, but after saving the game files I played around with the steam cache and preference files.
I deleted both folders "appcache" and "user data" in Library/Application Support/Steam/ and restarted the game.
Now it runs smoothly again.
Not only that the game does not crash any more, also the loading time until the main menu appears is much shorter than before.

Still the game does not store the save games in Library/Application Support/com.vpltd.TheWitcher2/... - they must be somewhere in the steam prferences folder.
I would be grateful for an information where steam puts my save games (steam cloud is still disabled btw and will be kept disabled).

I had the exact same problem.
As time went by, the witcher 2 started crashing more and more - eventually getting to the point of crashing everytime I would attempt to load a save.

I deleted both folders, as you outlined, and pasted the user data back in. Then I deleted all of my old saves. Now the game is snappy, loads to the main menu faster and hasn't crashed on a load.

Where did you find your old savegames? In which folder?
I have a feeling that the number of saves I have is causing my game to slowly respond, in return windows thinks the game has crashed and terminates the process. Can anyone tell me how to backup my saves to a new location (I have steam cloud save enabled)? Alternatively, can someone point me to a fix for configuring windows to not terminate the process after the witcher 2 application fails to respond fast because of loading all the save games?
Found the folder for the save games. Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\xxxx0137\20920
I made a 20290_bkp now I'm trying to load with fewer save files. I am certain this is causing my crashes because it only happens when I want to reload a save to try a different story arc.
im running win 8 x64 5700 gfx 1gb vram. 16gb ddr3 ram. no event log entries for these crashes.

Solved deleting most of the old savegames in there: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\********\20920\remote"

I have exactly the same problem. When I save it is no problem but when I try to load the game it crashes to desktop without any errors. I noticed the problem after I had played the game in an hour and a half and died and tried to load but then the game crash and when I went back there it didn't save my progress. Is there any way to fix this without deleting all saves ?

Back the files up in another folder, and then delete the data outlined in the thread. The issue is BECAUSE you have too many saves, and the game struggles with this.

Just a reminder that if you play while your "online" the game will save to the steam default file as stated above, if you play "OFFLINE" the game will save to "My Documents" and this can lead to another set of simlar problems later on when you sync your files to steam.

I know this thread is very old but still, thank you so much! I made a backup of my saves and started cleaning. Went from I think 985 save files (I have a problem) to 31, now it's back up and running beautifully.

Part of the problem is once it starts occasionally crashing you start to save more, which causes it to crash more, so you save more, until you can't play at all. Anyway didn't even think to check my saves so thank you!
