Texture and sound mods?

So has anyone found out if this is true or not or if there is a way to do this, according to the bfg page on doom.wikia.com the games engine is compatible with texture and sound mods from the original. It'd be nice if anyone had an answer to this or if wikia is just retarded for posting that.
