Way to get steam chat working while playing Doom 3 BFG?

Yes, I've actually googled for answers. The only one I found was that you had to change something in the CFG in the user documents in saved games "set net_voice "0"" to keep the game from stealing the mic during normal game opperation. However, this did not work. I don't even think the game uses that configuration file. (Then again, it just overwrite's it.)

Is there any alternative method short from giving up? Because thats not why I asked this question. Would anyone know how to get the microphone working and not being used by the game? I like having conversations while playing games sometimes. Even Serious Sam.
