Steam Achievements Disabled?

I keep getting the following error message every time it appears I would have received a Steam achievement:

"Achievements have been disabled due to the console being enabled during this game."

I just installed the game yesterday, didn't do anything at all to enable the console. Is there something in particular I need to do to disable it in order to activate Steam achievements?

Someone suggested I should add ""+seta com_allowconsole 0" to the Steam launch options in order to force it to disable the console. I tried that and it still didn't fix the problem, as I keep getting the same error message.

same here... checked everything, even started from the beginning but i still don't get achievements.

Someone else suggested that this might be caused by taking screenshots, but I tried loading again without taking any screens and still no achievements

I found out how to enable steam achievements again - however, note that any time you take a screenshot with the Steam hotkey it seems to disable achievements every time.

1. open up default.cfg in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\DOOM 3 BFG Edition\base

2. add the following line somewhere: seta com_allowconsole 0

There is clearly some sort of bug with taking screenshots where the game thinks you are using the console for some reason and disables Steam achievements for that playing session.

All you can do is exit the game and restart and your previous save point whenever that happens. (or don't take any screenshots)

I've done some investigating, and it seems that picking up both a PDA or activating a storage locker will disable achievements if you do so after taking a Steam screenshot. I have no idea why the game considers working with Doom 3's VGUIs cheat-worthy. From what I can tell, this started happening after the latest patch added more "anti-cheat measures". I guess they forgot to test them with the Steam overlay before shipping.

Duncan are you able to play the game and take Steam screenshots while still getting achievements, if you don't pick up PDA or activate storage locker?

Yes, as far as I can tell.

I also did a test run with FRAPS screenshots and I don't get the disabled achievements message. It seems it only pops up if you take a Steam screenshot.

Also, if you get the message, it seems you can reenable achievements by exiting the game. I'm not at a point where I can get an achievement easily, but I've noticed that, if I get the message, exit the game, then come back, take a screenshot and pick up a PDA, the "achievements are disabled" message will come back. This tells me that the disabled achievements are not permanent, at least as long as you don't save after getting the message.

OK, I just managed to get an achievement! This was after getting the "Achievements are disabled" message multiple times. However, I did not save after I got the message each time. Instead, I quit as soon as it popped up. It seems it'll only screw you over if you save after getting the message.

The support rep and I have been exchanging emails and he just advised to try reinstalling the game.

Ok, I think I might've figured out why the "achievements are disabled" message pops up when you pick up a PDA or open a locker. It's because each PDA and locker counts towards the "get all PDAs" or "open every locker" achievement, respectively. Apparently, something the Steam screenshot function does trips an anti-cheat system, which only kicks in when you actually contribute progress towards or get an achievement.

I figured this out with the "Get the BFG from Abram's office" achievement. Right before, I took a screenshot of the BFG in the case. Afterwards, I grabbed the BFG and got the "achievements are disabled" message. However, I quit the game and reloaded my save, then picked up the BFG without taking a screenshot. I got the achievement.

I recently fixed my own game data myself to get rid of this problem. I had my console on for a few days then had it switched off and couldn't seem to get the "Achievements Disabled" message out of my face. I then came across the games save data in "C:\Users\*username*\Saved Games\id Software\DOOM 3 BFG\base" which included my save games, my console history (commands i used) and D3BFGConfig.cfg. I deleted the DOOM 3 BFG folder and have been playing without the message since.
I realize that this topic is about the Steam Screenshot glitch but i would like to share this to anyone suffering from the problem i had.

I can also confirm that closing the game without saving after receiving the Achievements Disabled message will lead to the issue being fixed. Like DUNCAN, I also experienced it in the Delta Labs' BFG area.
