could not initialize Direct3D :(
when i start the game it says "preparing to launch" and then a white box apears saying the title above. it also says "make sure you have current video drivers and close any other applications that might be running. you will need a video card that supports at least pixel shader version 1.2."

if anyone can help i would really like to hear from you, also if you have the same problem i would also like to know :)

I had the same problem too. I fixed this problem. In my case,
You can find a installation folder by steam. maybe 'SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\The Walking Dead'. and click right mouse button on seleced 'WalkingDead101.exe' file.
And property setting you can use compatibility option to Windows 98/Windows Me.
It's done. maybe you will fix this problem.

I have the same problem, but its gets a bit more complicated: when I try launching walking dead 101, it crashes because of the same reason.

did you try what that guy told me to do in the comments above???

EDIT for future people (sorry for gravedigging): set it to compatability win 98, launch it, adjust resolution, close, then set compatability to win 7 to achieve full screen.

Run in Windows 7 compatibility mode solved my issue on Windows 10.

So this happened to me tonight and I spent an hour figuring out how to fix it. I set my graphics resolution too high (higher than my monitor) and it crashed, leading to a "could not initialize d3d" error whenever I would launch. What I did first was follow other peoples' directions and run in compatibility with windows XP, which got it to launch but would make the game stutter really badly.

What I did to get it working again without compatibility settings was that I right clicked the game in my steam library and in the update tab I turned off "enable steam cloud synchronization", then I went into my computers document folder and inside the "Telltale Games" folder I deleted "The Walking Dead" completely. Now from what I believe I think its the prefs.prop file inside that controls this, but I'm not sure. Deleting the whole folder will kill your save, so be careful.

I THINK what happens is that even if you delete that folder and uninstall/reinstall, the game files re-synchronize with the steam cloud and redownload that prefs.prop file, causing a permanent crash error. This is a little inept considering that if the game crashes at all I guess it synchronizes with the steam cloud, even if the crash causes a save bricking error or (in my case) a game-bricking graphics option change.
