Recommended control scheme for gamepad?

I just started the game and the controls are unusual to say the least!

I've asked friends who played it and they agree the controls are not very good, but both prefer gamepad to mouse & keyboard, which is how I normally play action games as well.

What are your suggestions for how I should map the gamepad controls?

All I do is switch places with magic and boost, and jump and attack

I have a gamepad-like keyboard setup, so lemme check...

Looks like right now I'm using preset 1, which is
Z attack/OK
X jump/cancel
C magic
V boost
Space camp menu
S previous skill
D next skill
1 2 3 skills

This actually isn't an optimal setup, so I think I might switch it to put boost on S (so I can access it without moving my index finger over), and then put skill switch on A/D instead of S/D. And then remap the skill hotkeys to QWE. (Alternatively, I might move skill switch to F/V and then map the hotkeys to ASD. Not sure yet. I actually played the game without Boost/Burst, basically.)

So naturally, this would correspond to the following theoretical buttons on a gamepad:
upper boost
outer attack/OK
lower jump/cancel
inner magic
shoulder buttons: previous/next skill
not sure about skill hotkeys.
