FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
THE GAME DOESN'T RUN BURN DEVELOPERS!
Take the following steps if the game does not start and check if the game works after each step:
  1. If you hear music but don't see the game, press Alt+Enter. Otherwise:
  2. Verify the integrity of the game cache:
    1. Right click "SpeedRunners" in your Steam library
    2. Click "Properties"
    3. Click the "Local Files" tab
    4. Click the "Verify Integrity Of Game Cache..." button
  3. Restart Steam
  4. Restart your PC
  5. Download and install Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012[download.microsoft.com]
  6. Download and install Microsoft .NET 4 Framework[www.microsoft.com]
  7. Download and install Microsoft XNA Framework Redistributable 4.0[www.microsoft.com]
  8. Use the XNA Gamestudio Cleanup Tool[blogs.msdn.microsoft.com] and repeat step 7.
  9. If all of that did not help you can post a new topic in the bug reports forum. Make sure to include a log file. See below how to get to the log file.

SpeedRunners Log File
A log file can be tremendously helpful in finding problems with the game. Follow these steps to find the log file:
  1. Run the game until it crashes. Immediatly after:
  2. Press the Windows button + R
  3. Copy/paste: %AppData%/SpeedRunnersLog.txt
  4. Paste the contents of the log file in your bug report thread
If no errors are shown in the log file, or there is no log file at all, errors can be found in the Windows Event Viewer:
  1. Try to run the game
  2. Press the Windows button + R
  3. Copy/paste: eventvwr
  4. Usually there are 2 error under Windows Logs > Application
  5. Paste these errors into your bug report thread.

General Questions:
Q1: So what's this game about?
A: SpeedRunners is a 4-player competitive platformer, where the goal is to out-run your opponents so much that they fall off the screen. Play online, local and/or against bots. There's a grappling hook you can use to swing spiderman-style and lots of powerups like rockets and bombs. Think Mario Kart as a 2d platformer.

Q2: I found a bug in the game! What to do!
A: Use the search bar on the top right here and see if someone else posted about the issue before. If so add a post to that thread, that will bring the thread back to the top of the list.
If nobody posted about the bug before, start a new discussion here. Gifs, screenshots, descriptions and replay files are super helpful to us in fixing your issue.
We are reading the forum regularly and try to reply to all bug reports.

Q3: How often do you post updates?
A: Ever since we got out of Early Access in April 2016 we mostly in maintenance mode. We mostly update the game when bugs are found and fixed. Other than that we sometimes still add new features when we or the community has a good and reasonable idea within the context of the game as it is right now.

Q4: What kind of features can we expect in future updates?
A: The biggest thing is that we're looking into doing some experiments with the ranking system. For more info on that see this discussion. Other than that we're working on a new secret feature as well.

Q5: Will there be a level editor?
A: Yes! In fact there already is one right now! Check the "Workshop" button in the main menu of the game! It has full support for the Steam Workshop as well, so you can easily create, share and play your own levels against your friends. There's a big disclaimer on the level editor though, as it still contains quite a few bugs and might even cause your computer to explode.

Q6: Is there a singleplayer mode planned for/in this game?
A: SpeedRunners is focused around multiplayer, as we think that's the most fun way to play the game. You can play online against friends or strangers, or you can plug in a couple of controllers and play local multiplayer. Additionally, you can play against computer-controlled bots. Any combination is possible as well, e.g. two local players + a bot + an online opponent. So, initially, we weren't planning on adding a singleplayer campaign.
However we ended up adding the story mode, mostly for practice purposes for the multiplayer.

Q7: How are you planning on keeping this game/the community alive?
A: Aside from constantly improving the game to make it better and better, we're doing regular updates, adding new content and features.
Other than that there is an active Discord[discord.me] and Reddit community.
There's also a pretty easy to use level editor that allows the community to create an endless stream of new maps.

Q10: Can I show this game on twitch/youtube etc?
A: Sure!

Q11: I heard you have all these advanced options for the game?
A: For the more expert users we have added some launch options. Also there are some options for bug diagnostics. You can add these options by right clicking SpeedRunners in your Steam library > Properties > Set Launch Options.
  • +res 1920x1080 Sets the resolution.
  • +windowed Opens the game in a window.
  • +borderless Opens the game in a borderless fullscreen window. This will lower performance a bit, but makes alt+tab work much quicker than fullscreen.
  • +fullscreen Opens the game in fullscreen mode.
  • +novsync Turns off vsync.
  • +framelimit 144 Limits the frame rate. While 300 fps is technically the max, but we only officially support up to 144 fps.
  • +framelimitmethod 0 Experimental feature. There are 4 ways to limit the frame rate 0/1/2/3. If you have an irregular framerate play around with them, see what works best for you.
  • +stats Displays a statistics graph on top of the game. Useful to gather info on performance related issues.
  • +priority Experimental feature. Changes the thread priority of the game. Available options: normal/abovenormal/high/realtime.
  • +nomusic Turns off the music system.
  • +host Special mode for hosting tournament games as a referee. It will cause the first slot in a lobby not to play in the game, making it effectively a spectator.
  • +arcade Great for a no worries setup of SpeedRunners in a public place. It will start the game in local party mode. You can only exit out of the game using ALT+F4 on the keyboard. Try it if you are hosting a party, connect 4 controllers and just have it run in this mode.
  • +logload Add additional logs about content loading in the log file.
  • +logtrails Add additional logs about trails in the log file.
  • +logdiscord Add additional logs about discord in the log file.

Q12: I can't find opponents/I can't join my friend's game!
A: If you haven't found an opponent in 5 minutes, or couldn't join a friend in 30 seconds there is something wrong with your (and/or your friend's) steam client.

You can try the following things to fix this problem:
  1. Check if your Download Region is setup right. In Steam click the Steam menu > Settings > Downloads and check if the Download region is set to the region you are actually residing in.
  2. Restart steam, this seem to help in some occasions.
  3. Verify the integrity of the game cache. Right click SpeedRunners in your steam library, click properties. There is a "Verify integrity of game cache" button in the "Local Files" tab in the "Properties" window.
  4. There may simply be not that many SpeedRunners players in your area. By default SpeedRunners only looks for players in an area roughly the size of the continent you are residing on on. It will automatically increase the search distance if no opponents can be found. You can increase the search distance even further in the "game options" menu.
  5. If non of that worked you may need some port forwarding[portforward.com] on the Steamworks P2P ports.

Q13: The game is not working (won't install / crashes on startup), help!
A: See the top of this discussion for help when the game doesn't work.

Q14: My controller doesn't work (properly)!
A: The game uses Steam's controller integration. Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4 and Steam controllers should all work out of the box. Other controllers may need a bit more configuration.
For more info on how to set that up see the guide here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1111404321
Q15: My antivirus detected a malware in the SpeedRunners folder!
A: Don't worry! It's only a false positive! The game code is scrambled in a different way for each update to prevent hacking. This method of code obfuscation is also adopted by malware programs, so the antivirus thinks the executable is infected, and it flags the executable as malware. So add an exception in your antivirus program and you'll be good to go!

Q16: It seems my boost key is stuck!/The boost depletes itself!
A: There may be a solutions for you here:

Trails Questions:
Wow, it looks like you guys are pretty excited about the new trail editor we added in the beta, great! I'm already seeing a lot of cool trails on the workshop, so good job y'all :)

Now, I understand there may be some confusion about how you will be able to use them in-game, and how it all works with regards to the Steam Workshop etc, so here's a FAQ that hopefully will make things more clear.

Where can I download all these cool trails?
In the Item Store, here.
These trails have been created (and curated) by the community. You and everyone else can vote for trails that you'd like to see in the game. Once a trail gets enough upvotes, we as developers will take a look to see if it doesn't contain any inappropriate (e.g. offensive or copyrighted) content or totally bugs out the game or anything like that. If it's a cool trail, we'll add it to the Item Store.

So SpeedRunners has an Item Store?
Yep! Similar to games like TF2 and Rust, SpeedRunners has an Item Store in which players can buy cool trails. The store works just like other item stores on Steam, so any item you purchase is part of the Steam Economy, meaning it's tradeable for other trails or even items from other games. The cool thing is that if a trail that you created is added to the store, you will get a percentage of its sales!

Can I also use my own custom trails in-game?
Yes! You can create any type of trail you like in the editor and use it in any game mode (ranked, online/offline, practice, etc). You don't have to publish it or put it up for curation or anything like that. However -and this is quite important- other (online) players won't see your trail in their game. That's because it's pretty easy to make super annoying trails that (for instance) fill up the entire screen, which would obviously ruin the game for anyone that you're playing with. Only trails that have been bought in the store will show up on other players' screens.

Won't all these trails obstruct the gameplay?
We take special care in making sure the game remains fun to play for everyone, so we'll only accept trails in the Item Store that meet a certain quality standard. This means no offensive trails, to copyrighted trails, no obtrusive or annoying trails and no trails that cause the game to lag. And since you will only see someone's trail if that person has bought it in the Item Store, you shouldn't come across trails that bother you too much. If, however, you still prefer not to see any trails, you can always turn them off in the options menu.

How do I make my trail available for other players?
The first step is to publish it. This places the trail in a voting queue for other players to vote on. See for instance the Workshop page. Everyone can then vote on it if they want to see this trail in the game. Once your trail gets enough upvotes -and if we (the developers) like it as well- we'll make the trail available for purchase in the Item Store.

My trail isn't showing up in the vote queue?[/b]
You need to accept all of Steam's workshop legal agreements, as well as fill in your bank details.

But I don't want to (or can't) monetize my trail (yet)..
No worries! On May 2nd, we added import/export functionality to the trail editor. You can find the trails that you created as .srt files by clicking the 'open my trails folder' button in the game. Simply send the .srt file you want to share to someone else via skype/email/whatever (or put it up on dropbox) and they can import it into their game. Importing is pretty easy as well - just put the .srt file in your 'Import' folder. Just remember; these trail will not be visible to other (online) players. Only trails bought in the store are visible to others!

What about ESL trails?
ESL Winners received a special ESL-Winners-Trail-Item, gifted to them on Launch. This item is part of the Item Store, but is not for sale or tradeable.

And what about the Early Access trail?
Similar to the ESL trail, there's a special trail that only those who bought the game during Early Access received. This trail also won't be for sale or tradeable. Players received this trail on launch, April 19th.

I don't like trails. Can I disable them?
Yes. There's an option for that in the options menu.

Community Forum FAQ
Hey everyone!
I would like to make a big thread about the most asked questions here on the forums, hoping that this thread will help people finding solutions for common problems (feel free to tell me if I have forgot some frequently asked questions, I'll add them here!)

I bought the game but when I install it on Linux I can only play the demo!
As of now for Linux the developers have ported only the demo build of the game. When the full game will be ported to Linux you'll get it free of charge. In the meantime if you want to play the full version of the game you have to play on a Windows machine (or a Virtual machine capable of running Windows applications)

The game doesn't start!
You can look at this
http://steamcommunity.com/app/207140/discussions/2/864980278046315148/

if this doesn't fix the problem you can post your bug report here
http://steamcommunity.com/app/207140/discussions/0/
reporting your error log found on %AppData%/SpeedRunnersLog.txt

Before doing this you could try to look for possible solutions already posted on the forum (you can use the search bar to do it)
For more detailed explainations you can look at this thread

Where's Excel? Why there's a guy called XL now?
Sometimes people during weekend just want to have some fun, Excel is no exception :)
If you didn't catch the joke
XL = Excel
X = Ex
L = El
Ex(c)el

My controller doesn't work, but with other games it does
This problem should have been fixed with recent updates, if you still have problems you can look at this guide, maybe it can help
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=387846195

It seems my boost key is stuck!/The boost depletes itself!
You should look at this, and see if this solves the problem

My antivirus detected a malware in the SpeedRunners folder!
Don't worry! It's only a false positive! The game code is scrambled in a different way for each update so the developers can prevent people from hacking (and looking at the code). This method of code obfuscation is also adopted by malware programs, so the antivirus thinks the executable is infected, and it flags the executable as malware. So add an exception in your antivirus program and you'll be good to go!

Have a nice day!

As an addition to the controller thing, in x360ce you now need to enable the 32-bit version of XInput 1.4.

Added it on the guide, thanks for the suggestion!
Gert-Jan Stolk  [developer] Jan 14, 2016 @ 8:14am
For a more detailed explanation:

If x360ce doesn't work:
1. In x360ce go to the "GameSettings > My Game Settings" tab.
2. Select SpeedRunners.exe there
3. Under XInput Files also check "32-bit" on the "v1.4" row (The value there should now be 0000000C)

I know it's not a frequently asked question, but is Origins Mode gone for good? I mean it's not as good as the current story mode, I'm just curious is all.

Also, have you ever considered adding the music that played during the Rise of the Falcon trailer into the game?

Origins is gone for good, because it was entirely replaced by Story Mode...if you want to play Origins you can google "Max Games Speedrunner"

Sometimes Steam is a bit slow updating your inventory.
There are 2 possible solutions:
1. Restart Steam.
2. Remove the contents of [Steam folder]\userdata\[steamID3]\inventorymsgcache (in your case: [Steam folder]\userdata\82292417\inventorymsgcache)

This is something we'll fix in the next release. I think it's caused by you having a trail settings file in the wrong location.

Deleting the following file should make the game work again: [Steam folder]/userdata/273082520/207140/remote/trails/settings.trails
