I think it's hyperbole; he dished out "I hope you die" messages a lot on Twitter before he made his account private, I would not take him to seriously over this.

I would, actually. I have a choleric personality, I often make death wishes to people I hate behind my screen even if I will not say it out loud (out of fear someone might actually do it) but talking about the death of another person is not the same as talking about the death of yourself. It's one thing to say "God I wish they'd get hit by a train" and another thing to say "I just want to get hit by a train", people only discuss suicide when desperate, either from depression, anxiety, or sometimes, when they cannot feel anything. Threats and death wishes made to others are influenced by similar things but usually have connotations of anger or some sense of power or confidence.

Plus, for all his asinine behavior, he seems like a very artistically-minded individual who takes his art and himself very seriously. I can believe not completing his masterpiece would make him want to die, because of the damage it would go to his self-image and self-esteem. Personally, I think it's somewhat poetic how one's art can drive them to such extremes of the body and the soul.

I think Kaze is right, I wouldn't be surprised if he always had an caustic personality, the internet was just his outlet. Look at how he talked about his former buisness partner for example.
