[Updated] Unofficial FPS/slow loading patch
I purchased JSR this evening and found I couldn't get beyond the initial loading screen without waiting for a lengthy period of time, given that the game was running at 1 FPS for whatever reason. I noticed that quite a few players are having the same or similar FPS/loading issues.

Since there's no patch and I get the feeling that there won't be, I've created an unofficial patch to try and sort the issue out.

It's only a quick fix so it comes with the caveat that you need to set the refresh rate for the game to 30hz otherwise the game will run too quickly. See instructions at the end of the post for information on how to do this.

Copy the patched exe linked below to your Steam folder, ensuring you back the original up for safekeeping.

Default Steam folder (remove the x86 for 32 bit Windows):
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Jet Set Radio

Click here for the VirusTotal scan for reassurance.[]

I offer no guarantees regarding the efficacy of this patch given that it's a quick hack.

Instructions for forcing the game to 30 FPS after applying the patch:
For Nvidia users with a 60hz refresh rate, this can be done in Nvidia's control panel by creating a profile for the game (or editing the global one) by setting vertical sync to 'adaptive (half refresh rate).

Click for settings example for Nvidia users.[]

Solutions for everybody else:

MSI Afterburner
  • Grab it from here[]
  • After installing, start the "MSI Afterburner On-Screen Display Server" (OSD)
  • Add a profile for jetsetradio.exe by clicking the plus icon at the bottom left or just use the global settings.
  • Click the spanner icon near the top right and change the framerate limit option from 0 to 30.

  • Grab it from here[]. The free version can limit the FPS perfectly fine, I believe.
  • Start it up and click 'Advanced' (GPU chip icon)
  • The last option allows you to enter your desired FPS limit. Enter 30 and make sure the box is ticked.

  • Grab it from here[]
  • Look at the options here[]

There are other options but the three above should be enough.

On a side note, I've noticed that even the game's load times are dictated by its 30 FPS cap. Uncap the framerate and suddenly the 10-15 seconds loading times drop to sub 1 second. That's shoddy porting for you I guess.

Thanks very much, was totally unplayable before this. Sucks that Sega won't officially fix it themselves.

Is it just me, or is the filedropper link broken?

Broken link, my game got ♥♥♥♥ed up when i updated my graphics card to play Serious Sam 3... now i get really awfull fps, can anyone reupload the .exe, i want to give it a shot see if it fixes, i tried messing with nvidia settings with this game, nothing happens.

I've reuploaded .exe to mediafire, should survive longer there.

Here's my feedback with the game, i tried the .exe file, two problems cropped up, first being steam wouldn't launch the game past the options menu startup, second problem being that the game went from low fps to very fast paced (like fast forward).

Messed around a few, and managed to fix the issue for me at least, here's what i did (might work or not with you guys):
1st problem - overwrite the original .exe file with the one mentioned in this discussion, go to steam->"games" drop down menu on top-> add non steam game to library, find the new .exe file in your steam folder, add it, a shortcut will be made for the game (this should fix the launching problem).

2nd problem - Do basically what was mentioned in the OP in that one image for Nvidia users, vertical sync = adaptive (half refresh rate).

Try running the game with the secondary shortcut (not original, otherwise launch problems occur).

I think the only downfall to this is steam achievements, since the game is not "original" anymore if you do this, thus steam won't track achievements, though i could be wrong.

Can somebody reupload the patch please ?

I used the patched exe, and now my game is running at a solid 60Hz... but it's WAY TOO FAST. Is there any way to change it to 30hz without installing any annoying third party software? I can't find it anywhere in Catalyst Control Center.

Either thru CCC, or external. This isn't an official fix for game, so it is only way.

Can I ask how you managed to get rid of this cap?
Fususu Jan 30, 2015 @ 8:32pm
Also thanks for the patch :)

I used a debugger to alter the game's timing code. Fixing it entirely would have been possible but I wanted to play with the game rather than its code. ;)

No problem. :)

Is it possible that you could make a 60FPS patch by capping the framerate to 60FPS, and then changing the gameplay logic to a 60FPS update of sorts?
