A little bit of plagiarism or just a great tribute?

Am i the only one who noticed the HUGE similarities between this song from S&S http://youtu.be/sIOZsfA9gt0 and this http://youtu.be/XXS3XZwPaEk (2003)?

It's either a nod to Metroid, or just a coincidence. I'd say the first is more likely. I can see a lot of indie developers slipping in references to classic games. I wouldn't rule out the second, though. They do sound alike, especially at the little melody parts, but most of both the songs is just a beat with some bass. I realized recently that the music from the new Hobbit movie sounds kind of like part of the score from Braveheart, so there's an example.

I agree, i'm pretty sure that Jim Guthrie made a reference to the Metroid song. Btw, there are some other big references to Zelda series in the game.

I don't think there's any intentional tribute here. The beats and melodies are just too dissimilar. If it were an intentional tribute, you'd expect more in common between the melody at 0:37 in S&S and 3:22 in MP, for example. Not necessarily an exact copy, mind- just enough of a similarity between the notes to unambiguously invoke memories of the older melody.

The closest similarity I can hear between the two is the mechanical/animalistic sound effects woven into the bass line. Even that is more a similarity in stylistic choice than a direct copy of the sounds involved.

If there's any link between the two, I'd guess it was more of a subconscious inspiration than any intentional reference. (A fairly common occurrence among music composers of any genre.) It's even possible both pieces share a third, older piece that inspired both of them.

Not having listened to the NES metroid music in many years, and not looking at the PRIME on the lower video, I thought the comparison was going to be between the posted Superbrothers song and the original NES title screen. I'm not sure if this is in the game or not, but I was looking through the S&S .DAT files and I found a file named "link," and surely enough it was a S&S version of Link. Either I missed the in-game tribute, or I found something fancy.
