Failed to start game (unknown error)

After today's update I am not able to play the game anymore (the message from the title appears). Does anyone have the same issue or a solution? I did not try the workaround Steam suggests, (deleting the appcache folder), as I am not sure how this affects other games/achiement progress etc.

im in the same boat. all troubleshooting solutions have not done jack. i uninstalled and re installed nothing! can anyone help or post if they got this fixed?

A friend gifted S&S to me this past weekend and I'm experiencing the same issue! I tried several of the troubleshooting options, and it hasn't fixed anything so far.

Also, if I try to access the game through the Steam folder on the C drive, it says: "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail."

I'm having the same issue. I get the unknown error, and when I try to verify integrity, I keep getting 'i file failed' thing. I heard that this 'side-by-side' is a microsoft visual C++ error though....

I tried an sfc scan bc of that side-by-side/integrity error messages - but that also didn't help (no system probs found). Nor it helped to set the config to "ENABLE_MIPMAPPING = false" like the s&s trouble shooting help suggested.
I presume the crashes have sth to do with one of the latest steam updates, bc I could start s&s without troubles some days before?
