Games For Windows LIVE Changes.
News for ALL G4WL victims! May actually be considered GOOD NEWS! I spent about an hour on the phone with G4WL Support to find out more about the server shut down mid 2014. After expressing my concerns as well as many subjects I found here on STEAM forums the rep was able to help me with an option which apparently was added to the G4WL Client a while back in preperation for the closure of the client service and servers. The update to the client included an option for creating a local account on your computer so that you can continue playing your G4WL games in singleplayer offline mode. The following are the steps to reach this option.

First start your G4WL game.. Once in the game, start screen, etc, open the Live overlay and sign out. Confirm the sign out. A new drop down will open from the overlay bar with usually 3 buttons on it. The center button is the "Create New Account" button. Click this button and on the next panel that opens scroll down to the bottom paragraph.. In this paragraph you should find a link that you can click on, "Create Local Profile". Click this link and follow the prompt to enter a new profile name. You can then save the new name as your offline, local, G4WL profile.

Repeat this using the same name for each game in your G4WL games list to set up all of your games to run on the local profile you now have on your PC. Remember to save this information for future use because you will be your only support staff after the servers shut down in 2014.

I have already tested this on my Bulletstorm (non-steam version) and it works great! No more log in issues and my save games are saved to my computer NOT to the online server account.

I hope this helps all of you with your G4WL concerns. This should take care of all G4WL dependant games to date with the only real exception being the so called free to play games like MS Flight, which is no longer a free game if you purchased any DLCs for it.

As far as MS Flight game. Microsoft's representative told me that the game was supposedly transferred to STEAM as a 100% STEAM game some time ago as part of their preperations for the shutdown and there is something in the works, due to the DLCs being paid for items with significant numbers of purchases, to get all of the DLCs moved to STEAM as well. I also mentioned the fact that the game itself is no longer listed in the game list for purchase or download and it appears that Microsoft was unaware of this fact. So he sent the issue up the chain to see if they can do something about getting it straightened out for all purchasers of the game expansions (DLCs) so Microsoft can get with Valve/STEAM to make sure the game remains availiable along with the DLCs for users who have already purchased any DLCs for their game because the purchase made the game no longer free since money was spent on it. We will just have to wait and see how things go with this.

I will post more here if I find out any new information about these issues. Hopefully STEAM will get with Microsoft about expediting the transfer of the game and DLCs for it as soon as possible so that we won't be loosing out or loosing our money for those of us who have paid for DLCs for our game.

Thanks for this info, I'm glad to see that someone was able to get some info on this. I'd hate to lose all my DLC and such cause Microsoft screwed up G4WL.

Glad to help. All I did was share my findings from my time on the phone with the G4WL and G4XB representative. As many times as I had gone into the client I had never noticed the local account setup much less looked for it. And to make matters even more comical from my view point.. I got agrivated at them for "Updating" the client when I logged in early last summer after finding out then that they where "Planning" on shutting it down. I could not see any reason to update a program they where dumping. But as the findings show. The update was an out option for all of us who have G4WL games that we want to continue playing. I even downloaded the last version of the client in case I need to reinstall any of my games. I am still working on a way to save all of my purchased DLCs to a disk or external hard drive for recovery and installation later.

We all gotta do what we gotta do! And it's nice to have fellow gamers looking out for such
info and sharing it with others who may need to know...

I made an offline profile, but when I try to sign into it, it says I have to make a Live account, which I presume makes it an online account after. Am I doing something wrong?

Should be a "Skip" option somewhere. I don't have it installed atm, so I won't be able to tell you extactly where, just look for it.

I can't find "skip" either. Mine does what |OS| Freelance gets.

well this is what I can find out.. if u know the dlc

regierty keys to look into are

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Microsoft\XLive]
"DashDir"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE\\Client\\"
"Default_Profile"=hex:e0,5b,59,ad,62,00,00,e0 (Im assuming this is the xbox live account)
"DemoBasePath"="G:\\Program Files (x86)\\Demos"
"DesktopShortcut"="False"
"DLCBasePath"="G:\\Program Files (x86)\\Xlive\\DLC"
"DownloadBasePath"="F:\\Downloads"
"GameBasePath"="G:\\Program Files (x86)"
"InstallerPath"="C:\\Users\\Wolf\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\XLive\\InstallerPath"
"PCID"=hex(b):13,32,9e,1b,35,4c,17,3a (no idea what this is) Possible hardware ID?
"SqmOptIn"=dword:00000002
"StartMenuShortcut"="False"
"Version"=dword:35005c00
"VideoBasePath"="E:\\Videos\\Games for Windows - LIVE Videos"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Microsoft\XLive\E0000062AD595BE0]
"PlayDevice"=hex:f9,a9,c3,84,f4,f4,b5,4a,b0,9a,1a,ca,9d,4d,38,9b
"PlayDeviceDesc"="Speakers (5- Logitech G330 Headset)"
"RecDeviceDesc"="Microphone (5- Logitech G330 He"

there 4 diffrent loction that these keys show up. I suggest exporting and backing them up as long with the Xlive\DLC* folder... incase u ever need to reinstall you'll already have all the DLC bits* + your GFWL Registery keys... Im still looking into making the steam version + dlc into a stand alone install..

Not sure about DLCs but having to have an open LIVE account makes no sense since they don't have G4WL anymore. The only thing I can think of is that you may not be running the latest release of the G4WL client. The last update of the program had fixes for all the online requirements so that you don't have to open an account. If you can't find the last G4WL client to download and install try going to the Microsoft support site for help. They may be able to point you to the last release of the client.
