If you want more responsiveness you might want to bug Carpe Fulgur on their forums. Though it might also involve getting the dev himself (Lizsoft) to bugfix this.

I recommend the Alternative Method and for me it isn't slower then the author said and the recommended method never worked for me.
About the question on what other games use DirectDraw, don't ask me.
