Why isn't ammo collection done automatically?
is there some reason why you wouldn't collect it?

spamming the use key everywhere is kind of annoying

You didn't have to hit a key for that in the original wolf3d. I don't know why you'd need to press one now.
Probably because the only keys you really used were like wasd 123456 ect.

You didn't have to in DOOM, DOOM II, Heretic, Hexen, Quake, Quake II, Hexen II, or DOOM 3 either.

This game encourages you to run&gun like the old school FPS.

Having to stop and manually pick up drops just slows the gameplay down.
You fanboys need to relax. It's a reasonable complaint. Having to spam a key to pickup items is tedious and distracting. It's not like you're looting everything off one corpse by hitting one key. You have to loot each indivisual item he drops. That's not good for pacing.

I think auto pickup can be an option for the run and gun purists looking carnage and to do speedruns. Maybe they can look into it. I like selecting items manually myself.

But you're really complaing over a game being more evolved and more interactive? I don't get it what do people want games to get more interactive or less? I never heard of anyone complain. And you still talked about really old games. O_O I like having to click a button not like it is such a horrible time cruncher of death. Got to press a button oh noes.

those 'really old games' are the best shooters ever made

if there was some actual decision-making involved I wouldn't complain. but instead of running over 10 bodies and moving on I have to spend 5 seconds looking at the ground spamming 'use use use use use use use use'.

it's just ammo / armor shard pickups. it's not exactly the height of interactivity... I don't care what I'm picking up. I don't care what the quantity is. I'm not even looking at the prompts.

it just slows the game down to the point of not feeling like wolfenstein

understand where you are coming from, ie skyrim, fallout etc.. it did hurt my thumbs a little. hardly worth whining about though.

Don't lie. There are so few enemies in certain areas throughout the game. It hardly encourages run and gun. It is terrible. When you get to more open areas and you think you are going to be challenged you see hardly anyone there and they often just stand still with their stupid AI and you pwn their ***. Terrible game.

The AI also didn't use cover and rather just shot at you and chased you around like idiots. Want that too?

Guys, seriously. Are we arguing over this? Better FPSes have done this, and if you argue "OH WOLFENSTEIN AND DOOM ARE OLD" then get out. If it weren't for those. We wouldn't be here. We wouldn't even have Steam since Gabe had his starts porting Doom to Windows from Dos. Having to manually pick up ammo isn't interactivity, it's just a stupid little inconvenience. Now, if we're talking about Health that would overcharge us and nothing else, I can understand manually picking that up, and secret items as well. But something as simple as ammo? Unneccessary.

Most games have auto ammo pickup. Manually picking up ammo is a useless and time consuming mechanic. Only shooters that should have manual pickup are those with inventories like Resident Evil or Stalker.
CardinalSIN May 20, 2014 @ 11:38am
Only today's gamers would argue picking up ammo is an extra game feature. "Look ma, it costs $60 because they added interactive ammunition...cool!"
