Because the point of forums is to provide answers to common questions. I just got one, and I was under the assumption is was a pre-existing item, that I had only just now found. Why should I check patch notes? What about this item tells me that it was only introduced this patch?

"today's patch notes" won't be today's patch notes in the future. If someone has these tokens in a few months time, and doesn't know what they're for, they'd be directed to this thread by a search and not have they're questions answered. for example, I searched "dark and darker skull token" and this thread is the third result. first result is the wiki, which just says "they're currency" with no further clarification. the patch notes in question are just titled "Early Access Hotfix #58" and at a glance give zero indication that they have info about skull tokens.
