ION cannons are capital weapons, which makes huge damage to shields.
Rest is just for regular fighting, some fast hitting, some slow but hard hitting.
Common thing, is that they do lots of shield damage, and lower than most comparable weapons as hull damage.
Ion Cannons do mainly shield dmg but also mess the targets engines and weapons
Ion Pulse Generators are a smaller version of the Ion Cannon that messes with the targets engines
Ion Disruptors are pretty much just like Death@Work described, once a targets shields are down the ID will start to burn through any equipment on the target ship i.e. shields, weapons, software, jumpdrives etc. The thing to note with the ID though is that when it fires it cause an arc of lightning between your ship and the target AND any other close by ship wether freind or foe, so BE CAREFUL when using the ID.
