How does this compare to Ori and Axiom?
I've beaten Ori and have started Axiom Verge. I understand this game is a classic. Just out of curiosity how do you guys think that Cave Story holds up the the more recent metroidvania games?

I wouldn't call Cave Story a metroidvania, it's too linear for that. I'd say its style of progression is more reminiscent of a Zelda game than anything else.
As for the game itself, it's fantastic. Lends itself really well to replays, too.

Huh, I had always thought of Cave Story as THE one that brought metroidvania's back.

Brought them back? Sure, metroidvania is a niche genre, but was it ever really dead?

No, I'm not in a position to say if it was ever actually niche enough to be called "dead." But as someone who knows little about it, my understanding of the game, and this comes from verry little research, was that Cave Story kicked off a kind of renaissance. But I guess it was more just about independent games.
I agree, I think that the hype around Cave Story was more about the quality that indie developers could achieve. CS is quite linear despite having that sort of open 2D world feel, sort of like Metroid Fusion, but still more linear than that.
I contend that Nintendo's neglect of their metroid franchise may have been a primary factor. Games like Axiom Verge have their roots in the metroid mod community and an overall desire to emulate those old games and fill the void left behind by Nintendo.
But to answer your question, Cave Story is a terrific little indie game that holds up well by itself for what it is, but is not so much a metroidvania as Axiom Verge or Hollow Knight.

What is Cave Story then? Just kind of a 2D action platformer? (nothing wrong with that)

Yeah, essentially. Really good though. I admit I don't know all the classifications of what makes something metroidvania or whatever, so you all can take my non-experience into account, but having played this and Ori I can tell you that Cave story is definitely worth a visit. Ori is much more smooth and has "more" features, but Cave Story has (in my opinion) a pretty gripping unique story, lends itself really well to multiple playthroughs, and just a charming feel. Good level design, good music, the hard ending is crazy hard but really satisfying...I think you can get the nonenhanced freeware version online still if you want, I hear there's not a whole lot different, but someone on here should be able to tell you for sure.

All in all, I'd highly recomment it. Great shooter platformer.

I finally played this for the first time after debating for... years... So glad I picked it up on a whim. Anyway, I'd put it more in the action/platformer/with very slight RPG elements, more like the old Wonder Boy (Monster World, Dragon's Curse, etc.) games. It's mostly action, but there are buildings you go into, plenty of character interaction, upgrades, secrets, etc. I'd put this up there with Axiom Verge and Shovel Knight (two of my other favorite recent 2D games of somewhat similar type) just as far as how enjoyable it is. (very tight controls too (if a little floaty on the jumping))

It's kinda unfair to really weigh this game against others like Ori. Simply because this game, comparatively, feels rather shorter than them. It's also, like others have said, not as much as a metroidvania game considering it's got a story that has you going in a linear path. Save for you wanting to get the good or best endings, so there's a few branches for you to pick from there.

It's more like a throwback to retro action/platformer games at best.

Sounds about right.
It's more like a Megaman game inspired by Metroid.
