Torchlight 2 vs Diablo 3
Just got Torchlight 2 on Steam for $3.99, pretty cool deal. Have never played it though. What are the similarities (if any) and the differences between Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3?

Thanks!

play it and figure it out :). check 1 or 2 reviews they summarize the facts well normally
Ok here we go, prepare yourself.

I've played both Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2 pretty extensively, and there are many things in it that differ from Diablo.

Torchlight 2:
1) You can have your own pet, kinda similar to a follower in diablo 3, which has it's own skills and gear. What is most important about him though is the ability for the owner to dump a phat amount of loot into his inventory, and then the pet can go off and sell it all by himself. Basically your own personal merchant, love this feature.

2) It shares the same loot feature as diablo in that when playing multiplayer, each player will get their own loot, so no need to fight.

3) The game has a quest system somethat similar to diablo, in that npc's will have you do missions in return for xp, money and multiple choices of gear.

4) The game's set pieces are much more common, and i daresay much less advantagous than the high lvl set pieces in diablo 3 (aka the bonuses for a max set are not as drastic most of the time)

5) Items you find will either have a level or attribute requirement, and you only need to meet one. For instance, if you find a hammer that requires lvl 10, but also say 25 strength, if you already have enough strength, even at lvl 5 or 6, you can use the item.

6) Each class has their own unique ultility/ultimate bar that fills by killing and fighting enemies. Don't remember what each one does for each class, but it really helps diversify them.

7) In regards to diversification, each class has VERY unique skill trees, and many two characters of the same class will not play the same.

8) Gameplay: The game play is pretty standard arpg, however you have far more action buttons available to you. This opens up play as you will probably only have 6 skills (2 mouse and buttons 1-4), but you can have more if you choose. You can spend your skill point in any combination of active and passive skills which could lead you to any number of playstyles.

But you can also fill these action slots with spells, as both you and your pet can have 3 spells, which are either active or passive. As well as fishing, which gives you fish to feed your pet which transforms them into a monster providing bonus's depending on the fish/monster.

9) Endgame: After you beat the game you open up the ability to run dungeons to your hearts content for leveling and loot, and these are randomly generated, not repeats of the dungeons you already ran. But they also put puzzles in the dungeons and if you solved the puzzle it would unlock a loot area for extra gold and loot (puzzles are also in the main story dungeons).

10) Theres a lot more, but ill end this with one word: MODS!!! This game has a plethora of amazing mods, from new classes, complete overhauls, you name it. I recommend playing through the vanilla game first, and then looking through the steam workshop to find what suits you most.

Hope this helped, enjoy the lovely game.

Basically, if you want glamorous effects and graphics, get Diablo 3. Otherwise, get Torchlight 2.

Note that TL2 doesn't have anti-cheat.

Torchlight 2 aallllll the f#*(&ingway!...allday!
It's (Torchlight 2) , at least to me, what logically should have been Diablo 3. Shame on Blizzard/Activision fools.

I realize people will say that Diablo 3 has hundreds of items but from what I've been told, Torchlight 2 has more items than Diablo 3 even with all of Diablo 3's microtransactions.

Again, that's just what I've been told, I've never played Diablo 3 though!

Microtransactions? Blizzard got rid of the Auction House long ago. There's literally nothing you can spend money on in the game. You unlock better items as you kill monsters. I've beaten TL1 and TL2 and I bought Diablo 3 not too long ago. D3 is the better game, imo.

Oh,all of the has so many special weapons. It attracts my attention

In my opinion, the biggest differences between the 2 are:

Diablo 3 is a closed box. You only get what blizzard gives you, and nothing else. They decide 100%, what kind of new and extra content you get to experience.
And sofar, its just more and more Rift grinding.
If you attempt to mod Diablo 3, even just in hopes of improving the graphic, you can expect the banhammer to be hunting for ya... R.I.P. darkd3.com... ;;;

Torchlight 2. You can do whatever the frag you want...
Add more classes? Okay!
Add custom gear? Okay!
Full conversion mods? Okay!

In TL2, you as the player, sets your own rules on how to play.
Play the vanilla game first, try out the classes and such, and just have a good time. Then explore the workshop for the absolutely amazing mods...

However, even for the vanilla game, there are some very nice quality of life improvement mods.
Simple things such as increased stack sizes and Respec potion.

There's also the Offline availability. For a time I had lost internet due to our router having problems. If I have had Diablo 3 I wouldn't be able to play any ARPG at all during those 2 weeks. But luckily I had Torchlight 2 installed and that helped sate my ARPG craving during those 2 weeks.

Well, both games are pretty good. Since everyone here pretty much told you what's so good about Torchlight 2, I will focus on Diablo 3:

1. In Diablo 3, classes are more well rounded. They play like they should, barbarian is a big bulky hard hitting dude with swords and stuff, demon hunter is a agile ranged character that focuses on crowd control with evade and trap skills etc., whilst in Torchlight 2, some classes feel like combination of multiple classes and IMO, they aren't really fleshed out well. Example of that would be Engineer, which I thought that it will play like barb, but instead it feels a bit like barb, a bit like paladin and a bit like some third class. Some might say that it adds to variety when doing different builds, but IMO, I would prefer if they just made each class feel like it's own.

2. There is no potion chugging in Diablo 3. Not because the game isn't difficult, but because the game simply doesn't allow it(30 second cooldown). IMO, this is great, because you won't find yourself spamming potion buttons(like I often do in Torchlight 2)

2. Diablo 3 on PC is always online. That can cause one huge issue: lag. Yes, lag will happen sometimes(atleast it did for me), and it might even cause death. Not very fun if you are playing hardcore mode.

3. Diablo 3 doesn't have mods, but it doesn't have cheaters either, also, it has a bigger community and stuff like leaderboards and seasons.

4. Barbarian in D3 has a whirlwind skill. Woohoo!(this is quite a subjective pro, but i just love playing a spin2win barb in diablo-esque games)

5. I think that the enemies are more varied and interesting in Torchlight 2, except for the bosses.

6. Diablo 3 has runes, which are essentially an active skill modifiers and they are pretty cool. You have an ability to switch around skills and runes without any penalty and that might not appeal to everyone, as now there is not much reason to make a 2nd character of the same class.
Calandril Mar 9, 2015 @ 6:56pm
Keep in mind also that D3 has changed significantly since the expansion, Reaper of Souls. Some of the early comparison videos will no longer be accurate, as they have improved drops, removed the auction house, and made a more interesting end game.

Don't get me wrong, I love Torchlight 2. I feel like, on launch, it was the better game. However, the developers did not have any plans to expand on the game, so it's stayed good, but hasn't really improved much.

Diablo 3 started mediocre, but IMO, has finally come into it's own as an enjoyable game. It still has issues, and isn't to everyone's tastes, but I think that, with the expansion, it is just as good as Torchlight 2 these days.

That being said, as people have mentioned, Torchlight 2 also allows for community expansion and improvements through mods, and if you enjoy them, they can add quite a bit to the game and it's replayability.

TL;DR: Microtransactions are comming to the asian version of D3 (with support for a future implementation in both EU and US versions).

I played through Diablo 2 and 3. I think the Torchlight series is better. Torchlight has heart, Diablo 3 was so bland. These are just my opinions though. I did have fun playing D3 with a friend. Bought TL2 to play with a friend, but originally it wouldn't run on my mac. Unfortunately my friend passed a week ago. So now I feel weird about playing. It all bums me out.

Its us asians. They probably think with us being used to the whole Pay to Win Schtich it'll work out. Still seems like a bad move IMO. Whole reason I stopped playing Freemium Games mostly as you don't feel empowered or playing the game at its most fun. Always shoving ads and promos that promise you to be OP with a cut from your wallet.

i'll sum it up here:

torchlight 2 is more like a single-player game you can play with friends if you wanted to.

diablo 3 is more like a multi-player game you can play alone if you wanted to.

torchlight 2 can be modded, hacked, tweaked, adjusted, etc., because it has offline capabilities, all items are worthless and can be duped.

diablo 3 forces you to be online, with no option to play when your internet goes down.

torchlight 2 has a crappy storyline.

diablo 3 has an even crappier storyline.

torchlight 2 lets you customize your character's stats and skills. but, as usual, only a handful of them are worth taking.

diablo 3 just gives you all your skills as you level up, but limits you to only 4 on your hotbar.

torchlight 2 is not actively being developed. it's a single installment so if you like the game as it is, it won't change on you.

diablo 3 is actively being developed, meaning the game won't be the same tomorrow or any day after. if 80% of the fans complain about something you like, say goodbye to it soon after.

torchlight 2 is set in a violent fantasy setting but has cartoony-looking characters for some reason.

diablo 3 completely revamps tyreal into a black guy. he's cool looking, but will never be as cool as his original form.

torchlight 2 is the last game made by Runic Games in the past 2 years. nobody knows (or seem to care) what they're doing now.

diablo 3 is being developed alongside Blizzard's legacy of the void and heroes of the storm. both games also suck, and are likely taking away resources from diablo 3.

torchlight 2 has music that reminds you of diablo 2.

diablo 3 has music that reminds you of star wars.

torchlight 2 makes you read because voice actors are too expensive.

diablo 3 makes you listen and the voice actors suck.

torchlight 2 is played by care bears.

diablo 3 is played by smurfs.

torchlight 2 is one of a million diablo clones.

diablo 3 is also a diablo clone, but it's diablo so that makes it okay i guess?

torchlight 2 gets boring after you've spammed the same ability 100 times.

diablo 3 gets boring by the time you finish diablo 1.

torchlight 2 is playable on steam and will be supported on SteamOS and Linux platforms.

diablo 3 is playable on windows and mac, because Blizzard's too good for steam.

torchlight 2 is not DRM-enforced.

diablo 3 goes DRM on your balls.

torchlight 2 has no vehicles you can ride.

diablo 3 also has no vehicles you can ride. (wow! the lack of innovation of this genre and you guys still like this???)

torchlight 2 was developed by former developers of diablo 1 and 2.

diablo 3 was developed in part by a former wow-developer Jay Wilson who pretty much publicly told the original creator of Diablo to go ♥♥♥♥ himself.

torchlight 2 has difficulty options and new game+, but the game is still too easy on hard mode.

diablo 3 has no difficulty options but instead 4 tiers that are level-locked. their hell tier - famed for being the most difficult - was, for some reason, succeeded by a new inferno tier that nobody could beat without farming items for several weeks.

torchlight 2 has a mage-like class.

diablo 3 everyone is a mage-like class.

torchlight 2 still lets you use your regular attack sometimes.

diablo 3 assumes all regular attacks are silly, and of course you'd want to spend all of your mana (or w/e resource you have) spamming abilities.

torchlight 2 has passive skills that just boost stats.

diablo 3 has passive skills that alter the abilities entirely.

torchlight 2 is not as cool as dark souls.

diablo 3 is also not as cool as dark souls.

torchlight 2 gets installed during LAN events, but everyone ends up playing path of exile - another diablo clone.

diablo 3 still gets played by die-hard fans of the series.

torchlight 2 has a "2" in it's title. and if star trek has taught us anything, it's that even number titles suck more than odd number titles.

diablo 3 has a "3" in it's title. it sucks more because it's the one exception to the above rule.

torchlight 2 was over-hyped.

diablo 3 was also over-hyped.

torchlight 2 doesn't have any interesting NPCs at all.

diablo 3 had only one interesting NPC and he's dead now...

torchlight 2 has really lame boss battles. the final boss just spams AoE attacks for the most part.

diablo 3 has one really cool boss fight, but it's not the final boss.

torchlight 2 is a little more random.

diablo 3 is a little less random.

torchlight 2 has cartoon cutscenes with cheap spine-based animation probably done in adobe flash.

diablo 3 has really fancy 3D cutscenes, but why buy the game for that? just watch them online somewhere.

torchlight 2 gives you a little scrappy pet that fights and collects items for you, and even goes to town to sell your stuff despite the cheap low cost of town portal scrolls anyway.

diablo 3 has no identify or town portal scrolls, but still has unidentified items you can identify at will. pointless game mechanic? yes. yes it is.

i mean really... they both might as well be the same game. :\ one just lets you cheat more if you wanted to.
