I played this mod ( Beat for Enemy Within) and there is one rule: Forget everything you know about Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within. Time to learn. This is a greate mod.

You don't have to pay to join nexusmods (not sure if that is what you were referring too). Honestly, joining nexusmods is a good idea in my opinion. Seriously, check out their database of supported games.

This mod will give an xcom fan another 100 hours of gameplay. I've not had issues with nexus mods, I prefer them to steam, and Long War was basically designed in mind for steam use. I think anyone thats beaten and enjoyed xcom once or twice (at least) should try long war. Its much more brutal and unforgiving. It also expects you to lose battles, and to know which ones to run away from. Think more as if your playing the original xcom on old dos.

I prefer nexus mods as well. I've downloaded several mods for different games with no issues. Also, after you join, they won't send you spam or junk email - site is legit. So don't let a registration process keep you from a mod the quality of long war.

Another 100 hours? I played this mod since I bought the game for PC, now I have 200 hours in it and still not assaulted the alien base :P
Anyways, gotta love long war, reminds me of Full Spectrum Warrior but in turn based and gross aliens.
And if your really don't want to join Nexus, you can download it from a torrent site, I think, but you'd probably have more issues than you'd have with registrating for totally free.
It also breaks your game, yes, but you can delete the mod any time you want and reinstall it when you feel like you can continue.

Currently on sign up it lists only the pay options but if you don't tick one and just click continue or ok it will sign up for free just fine. I did this 3 weeks ago.

There will be no steam support since the Developers of XCOM are not providing any mod support. IF you have mod problems you need to speak to the devs of the mod. The forums over at Nexus has a bunch of great people who could help you out really quickly with any problems you may have.
